Hi, i have been playing with stcom on my 80 gb seagate drive, i have taken fw backup through stcom but i cant write it back as the fields for APP, CERT, VENDOR etc are blank even after clicking "Module Address". also what is the size of reserve.trc which you get on backing up SA as mine seems to be more than 180 MB(calculated) which seems impossible to backup at 9600 baud rate( i had taken about 9 MB when the process was interrupted due to power outage). can someone tell me what are the adresses of APP, CERT, VENDOR etc on this drive? or how to write these back to the drive?
My drive details are:
Model ST3802110A, Firmware ver 3.aaj
TONKA2 - 1_Disk 3.AAJ 04-19-06 11:25 AAJ,1H_P_013_M0,4T
CERT Rev = .0C6
NONE
Mask Rom Rev = M-31
Unique Descriptor = .3M0
Orig Code = AAJ4T0 Tonka2_3.0F7.0C6

Firmware location may vary by each drive.
You can get firmware tracks location by pressing ^Z and ^R. Then type y in the command line window and ↵.
1st App Code Cyl 00001010 - APP
1st CertCode Cyl 00001044 - CERT
1st Intf Sys Cyl 0000104E - Vendor
Of course, your numbers will be different.
Reserve.trc is - I think - useless and you can use greater speed with Tonka if I remember correctly.
Write them back from the Class F-boot menu fom level F.

Can the drive work properly if i set the drive age directly to 50 or it will need to complete all the tests in order to work properly ( it is taking too much time to complete, more than two days and still running)

WHAT ???

It's this a joke ?

The knowledge i share doesn't have anything to do with stupidity and lack of commun sense !!!

If you pick up an hammer and you smash your drive with it are you going to blame me then just because i run one HDD forum ?

Where did you read me stating that self scan would be safe to the data ? And to start with why would someone ss a drive they are going to send to a data recovery firm ?

Yeah, blame me...

Rssss

Buddy ,
I Am Talking About The Customer. What i Am Saying Is That Your Advise Only 25% Customers Can Understand 75% Will $%#$%# There Cases even More And Make Like Hell For DR Guys Also .

PS : He Wants To Do a Selfscan And Then Give The Drive To a DR House Awesome

"It's this a joke ?"
Only one person seems to understand :o
why should we blame you spildit when you are giving knowledge to those who seek it. i know exactly what i am doing and i am definitely not sending the disk to any DR center. forums are for helping people who want to learn or have a problem, not for promoting one's own business.

It is a 80gb drive, if it didn't finish selfscan for 2 days, it must have many defects.
You may set age to 50, restart the drive (never do this until test 2 hasn't finished) and see what message it will output.
If no error messages, you may try to scan with MHDD, but likely it will fail.
If you get error messsages, you need to return deleted (during test 2) fw modules (overlay, vendor, sometimes app) - you backed up previously - to the drive.
But if head is bad, it may be impossible, because the bad head will refuse to write correctly.

Thanks for helping spildit and helpless, i don't need the data because i dont remember what was on the drive, the drive became inaccesible due to a faulty adapter. Before attempting anything i knew that ss will wipe the drive. i have ran ss three times, the first time ss didnt finish properly with some tests not even attempted, then i ran ss with AA but the tests 31 and 3A took about two days. After that the drive age was at 4f and it gave the error 'not interface age' .when manually set to 50 it gave the error 'unable to load overlay 01|000a' but i doubt that the selfscan had completed successfully as the p-list and g-list both were empty and cert logs were not present even for the tests which had completed successfully. Then i again ran ss with AA but had to abandon midway at 3A due to lack of time but this time the p-list was getting populated so it seems it is working(and the speed of the test was much better than the last time). I will resume ss and lets see when it finishes. But one thing i have noticed is that the drive type is 00 after first ss but i think it should have been 3F which was the original value . am i wrong?
