Hi Gurus

Is there any chance heads would be compatible between two slightly different models, like these?

Thailand

Donor
WD 2tb

Thanks

Those look like a good match. It is helpful to include the first few characters of the serial number.

Head maps are critical. You can usually use a 2 TB head stack on a 1.5 TB drive, but sometimes the smaller drive head stacks won't work if they are missing heads or have bad heads (compared to the larger drive).

For example, a heads map of 0,1,2,5,6,7 with six physical heads will work to replace a drive with a heads map of 0,1,5,6,7, and five physical heads, but I wouldn't usually attempt the reverse. However, if the smaller drive has six heads, then often it is OK to use it on the larger capacity drive.

Sometimes a manufacturer will truncate a drive's capacity because of a heads / platter issue. Other times they simply don't use one or more (good) heads to meet a production requirement. You generally don't know which.

Confused yet? :-)

Actually more or less makes sense, thanks for the info. :)

I'm helping find the donor but not doing the work myself. A second hand 1.5tb drive seems impossible to find other than extremely expensive examples so I thought of maybe trying a different sized drive in the same family. I'll find out what equipment they have.
