I recently installed the hdd raw copy tool and it does not recognised the hard drives connected to my desktop running xp.

I have 2 internal and 2 external drives

Can anyone explain why this might be happening?

Thanks

Might like to say what is the tool you installed. This one can help to answer your question on this one. Normally people will use DDrescue on this one to do a clone on their HDD that is if they do not have a good imager such as Atola, DE, and DDI.

I think the OP has given the name of the tool - HDD raw copy tool is listed here:

@exaudiouk,

Assuming that I've guessed correctly, and you're referring to the software linked above, then can you confirm exactly what you mean - are you saying that it isn't showing any of your 4 disk drives?

If that is true, my only guess is that your logged-in Windows XP user doesn't have permissions for device access i.e. not administrator.

Hi Vulcan,

I can confirm that none of the 4 drives are visible in the Source Device Selection window of HDD Raw Copy Tool 1.02.

I have just now run the program as administrator but still no hard drives showing...

Thanks for the info. A screenshot would help, but just to confirm, you are seeing the File option on the Source Device screen, aren't you? If so, then the only cause I have seen for this, is a Windows permissions-based issue. It would be interesting to see if other Windows-based cloning software behaves the same way (you could try HDClone, for example, which has a free version). The behaviour of different cloning software may help to show whether this is something about your system, or about just one piece of software. I don't have other suggestions to give at the moment, based on those symptoms and my available time. Hopefully other readers may have more ideas...

Added: Just a thought: Have you checked to see if any of the Windows event logs (specifically system & application) record anything when you run HDD Raw Copy Tool? There are other checks that could be done (e.g. adding breakpoints to Windows API calls, as I do to *nix calls) to try to see what's happening, but that's beyond what I've got time to research & then talk you through - hence why the indirect observation via looking at behaviour of other cloning software is what I've suggested, as something you could try.

Thanks Vulcan

I have tried using another computer (my brother's laptop) to do the job and HDD Raw Copy Tool has worked fine and I'm copying the data from the problem WD 10EAVS hard drive to a new Seagate SG12 hard drive.

There is clearly an issue with my desktop PC in recognising hard drives as in the last hour I noticed that every few minutes the new Seagate SG12 was unrecognised then recognised again, have you experienced anything like this before?

I may start another topic on this...

P.S. One other thought - some anti-virus / anti-malware software could also cause this behaviour (still assuming that you are offered the File option in the Source Device window).

Edited to add:

I don't have a clear enough understanding of what you're describing exactly, nor of the history of this situation (which is also important), for it to be sensible for me to offer advice.

Hello,

sorry to bump this after such a long time, but I have a similar issue. HDD Raw Copy Tool doesn't see one of my external HDDs. It sees everything but that drive. I can't access it either, and I can't see it in disk manager, but I do see it in the device manager. It's dead and I was hoping to recover some data without use of Linux or other complicated stuff.

Please help.
