Hello,

I am another "happy" user of this drive which just failed. Just all of a sudden 'boot disk failure' after restart and the disk is not even seen in bios now. I have read some threads about about other people having this exact drive or the DM series and it looks like not every failure is the same. Is there anything I can check myself safely and not corrupt the data ? Do you know any experienced users from Poland who may be able to check?

Yes, I think so. I have another similar Seagate disk ST2000DL003, which still works and comparing sounds they make on startup, they are similar, at least the spinning part. Only with DM, Bios has trouble recognizing, it shows correct number of devices (total=3, DM, ST and another disk), but then hangs for a while on checking SATA port DM is connected to and finally says 'no disk found'.

Possibility 1 - damaged translator
Possibility 2 - damaged media cache
Possibility 3 - damaged heads

In all 3 cases, bad sectors are probable. It is also probable that there is a combination of more than one of the above issues. If you value your data, seek professional assistance before things get worse.

I cannot speak for the labs in your region, but my lab charges $350CAD to recover the data from these drives, if we can do so without changing the heads. I'm sure that there must be some reputable labs around there who also don't overcharge for their recovery work. You could send it to Sean at pcimage.co.uk now while the GBP is taking a beating from last night's decision to separate from the EU.

Thank you Luke. I looked at your log and there are two cases of my model, both firmware issues. Is it true that this model has firmware on the plate? In this case, is it difficult to fix it if it became corrupt?

Hello everyone. It 'the first time I connect to the forum. I hope I can help restore life to my hd sawn barracuda st2000dm001 p.n. 1ch164-300 FW cc 43. The disc was mounted on a nas, while I was downloading some files, the system crashed. I tried to restart it from that moment on the disc
start, they feel the heads that initialize and after a few moments you stop.
I replaced the pcb, reinstalling the old fw but the problem remains the same.
I hope I have explained the problem clearly. I trust in your help for data recovery.

You can buy a Seagate PC-HDD UART Adapter, and use this to enter into serial port; and see what will be shown in the terminal interface.
