The hard drive has started to have issues recently and I'm not sure how to solve them. The hard drive says there are disk errors when connected to a PC, and is "unmountable" when connected to a Mac. I can access most files, but some files I am unable to view, open, or transfer. Some files are accessible even in some folders while others are not in the same folder. When attempting to copy these files over, the action hangs and times out. When running check disk, the operation times out at 0%. When running various recovery software the scan times out very early on. No error code is given really other than it timing out. Once a time out occurs my computer is put under a fair amount of processor stress or explorer will lock up, even for up to 45 minutes, until I power down the drive. I'm unsure what may have caused this, perhaps from disconnecting the drive without doing a safe eject on a Mac device. After that these incidents started to occur. It's a Seagate 160GB External HDD Model number: ST3160203U2-RK. The disk does not make any funny or strange noises, but during time outs the HDD light indicator no longer flashes or turns on. I was able to copy most files over from the hard drive but not all, and the remaining are still very important to me. What could I do to fix this? Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for your reply. I've heard Acronis to be quite good at doing this, might you recommend that? And do I need a completely blank drive to transfer it to or could it be one that I already use? I suppose I should buy Acronis then and see if that works, I've heard opening these seagate drives in particular doesn't do much as they are blocked or encrypted in someway, but I could be wrong and worth trying. Might you suspect using Acronis first or have some other program to recommend?

Acronis is not a recovery tool it's a backup/cloning/wiping tool for good hard drives. It will probably time out and likely give up. On rare occasions it will ask if you want to skip (All) bad sectors but that's typically only on a good drive with a few bad sectors. Like Spildit said

If you keep hammering the drive and trying to get the files out you risk to kill the drive and loose all the data.

In the future you could use Acronis to image a good drive so you don't need data recovery ever again. You can get a FREE version from Seagate and Western Digital depending on the brand HDD you have. They are limited by not allowing scheduled backups and you have to have at least 1 of their brand HDD.
WD Acronis
Seagate Acronis - AKA DiskWizard

It is inadvisable to run CHKDSK in repair mode against a drive with numerous bad sectors.

Start by examining the SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo:
http://crystalmark.info/software/Crysta ... dex-e.html

Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

I would remove the drive from its enclosure and obtain a log via its serial terminal port. You will need a TTL adapter for this.

If you don't want to pay then the best option is to get something like ddrescue or HDDSuperClone tool and attempt to clone the damaged drive to a know working one.

Just curious is ddrescue - HDDSuperClone better for this application vs HDD Raw Copy Tool?

Thanks

Try this - remove the drive from its enclosure and obtain a log via its serial terminal port.
