3.5" Toshiba HDD Not Spinning. PCB Failure.

July 30th, 2017, 15:58

Hi. I have a HDD that I stupidly sent 12v down the 5v line accidentally. I just heard a spark followed by a burning smell and it no longer spins up anymore. I seen that ic could be a TVS diode so I went ahead and tested and found that the 5v TVS diode was shorted in both directions. I've removed it just to see if the HDD will spin up again but it still isn't working. If I get it to work I will replace the diode but has anyone any idea what else could be wrong? I have removed the diode in the green circle and I had bridged the connection here in the red circle thinking it might be a 0ohm resistor but still nothing. I've removed the bridge again but this picture still has it bridged. I have a multimeter to test I'm just not sure what could be wrong though everything looks ok except the board is a bit dirty. There is a slight chip in that capacitor on the bottom but that was me accidentally and it still should work fine. Any ideas what else could've failed?

Thanks.

Can you show us a photo of the whole PCB? Model number?

The big chip in the middle is LSI 6045 and the only other number I see on the PCB is E162264.

Your PCB looks like this one (0A90377):

Hitachi makes 3.5" drives for Toshiba.

You can purchase a replacement PCB, including a mandatory firmware transfer, for US$50.

Otherwise, can you measure the Vcore, V1 and V2 voltages?

They're all showing 0v unless I'm doing it wrong but that part of the board warms up when it's plugged in.

I seem to be getting about 1.6v or 1.7v on V2 but 0v on the others.

ISTM that your most expedient option would be to replace the PCB and transfer the flash memory IC from patient to donor.
