I have this FBLite ROM, 256KB size. Long story short, the last three quarters of the ROM have been lost (erased), so I only have the first 25% (64KB) of the ROM contents. Can someone ID the ROM F/W version by examining the contents?

ROM can be found here: https://gofile.io/?c=U4XplN

I would say a qualified guess:
>ROM version............................. : 16.1VH
>ROM F/W version......................... : 0016001V

+1
The drive model should be WDC WD10JMVW-11AJGS1/2 (USB drive)

ISTM that the ROM verison is of no consequence. The OP would still have trouble gaining access to the SA. If he were to succeed, then module 0x109 would have the ROM template, would it not?

Without ROM mod 4F, SA access is extremely difficult.

In that HDD model it is very simple to obtain the original ROM from a rom of that model. I don't think you have any difficulties.

Is this yet another job that was botched or sabotaged by a data recovery company?

It seems that 4F sits almost right at the end of the ROM and doesn't fall within the first 25%, and speaking to those who know their stuff it doesn't seem this is possible (unless perhaps paying someone else a large sum of money, which isn't viable).

Thanks for the input.

I can imagine! With a lot of “trial and error” on mod 4F

I insist that it is a very easy process to recover the ROM of that HDD.
You have to take a firmware and ROM from an HDD of that model.
ROM is recorded.
Access to the SA is blocked.
The LDR is loaded.
And it gives the option to rebuild the ROM reading by TRACK.

With respect, I think you are wrong.

But wish you weren’t!

I skipped a step, sorry.
After loading the ldr you have to make the option to search for SA modules and save a copy of the SA.
Once saved, module 01 is loaded and then you can give the option to rebuild the ROM by TRACK.

I might be wrong and not as I say, but I've done it many times and it worked for me.

Greetings.

We are talking FBlite here, I have to insist that you are wrong

you may search for whatever you want in the sa, without 4F you won't find what you need.

to Sean: it is not by trial and error. It is a well defined process.

Some time ago I parsed an example of module 4Fh. There was one new section whose function I did not understand. Do you understand which adaptive parameters are required? If so, then that may mitigate the need for trial-and-error approaches.

Hello Franc,

i do know precisely which params make the mess and what they are used for. That's what makes the recovery process a lot faster than simple trial and error - right as you wrote.

First of all, I apologize for my incorrect comments, because in a fblite you cannot do what I said.
On the other hand I pass a modified 4F module, with the only data that it needs to make the HDD boot correctly.
Tomorrow I will try to find a recognizable pattern.
