Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I haven't bought a standard big storage drive in years so I have no idea what everyone considers the sweet spot for price and space. I know I want something larger than a TB, as thats all I have now, and the last time I bought a regular hard drive 1 TB drives were pretty much the largest monsters you could afford.
So what's there to do now? 3 or 4 TBs? Do hard drives last based on their brand?
I want something that isn't a bank breaker and will up my storage space by a few times going from a single 1TB.

Western Digital seems to be very popular right now. I cannot remember if Seagate or Toshiba outsells WD or not.

You can buy external drives such as WD Elements for about US$20 per TB (in 8TB - 12TB capacities). The drive inside the case will often be a HGST helium model.
