Quantum 240AT Hard drive no longer reports to BIOS

I tried to clone my hard drive. Unfortunately, I did not succeed. After that, I wanted to try another target hard drive. Since I only have one IDE port on the mainboard, I have to define each hard disk as a master and the other as a slave. After various attempts, only my hard drive no longer reports itself as a single drive. The engine revs up. The read / write head also seems to move briefly. What could have happened Is the circuit board defective or the mechanics? Does somebody has any idea?

Not seen one of those for a while. Jumpers for master/slave setting are on the pcb I think. Post a picture of the pcb and we'll see.

You don't have to clone IDE-IDE if you have sata on the motherboard you can clone IDE-SATA or IDE-Image file. If you have 2 ide drives on the same cable you need 1 drive set as master and the other drive set as slave.

As you're drive spins, is shown in the bios and is the correct size - you should be able to get at least something from it, assuming no physical damage.

That's set to master so make sure it's the only drive on the cable for now. Put it on the primary ide port and change the settings in the bios - unless I'm I misunderstand your question and the screen shots you have shown the BIOS recognises the drive but the auto detect feature at post can't so it needs to be configured manually in the bios.

As I said the drive has been shown so far. It is no longer recognized after the copy attempt. I implemented the jumpers and had no success. Can the circuit board be damaged by incorrect setting? I had a Seagate connected as a slave.

do not connect anything on the same channel until you found out what's being wrong with the quantum. Can you hear normal head seeking sound from it?

As it is an old type drive and also as it shows in the first bios setup photo as LBA mode 'not supported', you could try setting it up manually as CHS mode. In some cases I have seen that work. Be careful with the jumper positions!

I have now done a cross test with an identical hard drive. I noticed that the PCB is OK and the problem is with the hard drive body. The defective hard disk is not recognized by the BOS. Not even when I enter the CHS values ​​in the BIOS. The question is, can I reactivate the hard drive? Are the heads stuck on a track?
How would I best solve them?

A logical conclusion would be that you killed the heads then.

If the data has value to you get it to a DR professional - they will do all the diagnose for you and probably free of charge, if the problem is internal there's nothing DIY to do that could be considered safe.

I would look for a terminal port on your donor drive. This will possibly transmit a diagnostic message.

If you have a USB-TTL adapter, try to find the drive's UART pins (Tx and Rx) by testing for output from the various test points (TPnn). I would expect these to be located near one of the two Quantum chips (U207 / U209). Also try the two unpopulated jumpers on either side of JP1.

1. I don't have a USB TTL adapter. When I buy one, I don't know what other software I need.

2. How do I then measure at the test points? What volts do I take 5V? and where do I connect GND?

3. What information do I get by reading the test points?

Any terminal software should do, eg PuTTY, HyperTerminal.

That said, your model may not have a UART port, so you may get no information from the drive.
