Mostly curiosity here, but wondered if anyone has the answer.

Whenever I increase the size of an HDD partition via Gparted / Disks etc on an external USB SATA enclosure, the access LED will flash approx every 1 second for a few minutes, then stop. I'm guessing there's some kind of checking going on but not sure if it's the OS (Linux) or the drive interface controller?
