Has the preamp gone crazy and turned on the heaters on all the heads at the same time? I have heard of cases where erasing was activated on heads in a similar way with very bad consequences for the data, but for the heaters to melt the ramp, this is the first time, I didn’t even know that this could happen.

Maybe tech has modified AFH parameters in a completely reckless manner?

i think the heater breaks open well before such amount of heat can be produced. Not to mention it is not turned on for all heads at the same time. I am heavily playing with all kind of preamp settings and could not yet produce such result (luckily ) on one case, with an inappropriate preamp setting i was able to make a bump on the head, which was only visible on microscope, one head at a time and it was gone... I admit i did not let current flow for an extended period of time, so dunno if it is able to heat things up to this extent. But this experiment involved tricking the fw to believe it is talking to a different preamp and one bit in one register was set wrongly, making the head bump. I doubt this could happen under normal circumstances, unless overvoltage or something similar, but that would leave a trace on the pcb as well.
