seagate skyhawk could not be detected

October 27th, 2026, 7:43

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for advice on diagnosing and repairing a Seagate SkyHawk 2TB HDD.

Drive information:

Model: Seagate SkyHawk ST2000VX008

Capacity: 2TB

Firmware: CV12

PCB number: 2E3164-315 (please let me know if the complete PCB number or revision is needed)

Symptoms:

The drive spins up normally.

It is not detected in the BIOS or by SeaTools.

The same errors appear during startup, even when the SATA data cable is disconnected.

I can communicate with the drive through its UART terminal using a USB-TTL adapter at 38400 baud, 8N1.

I can access the F3 T> prompt and switch between the /1, /2, and /7 diagnostic levels.

UART startup log:

Boot 0x40M
Spin Up
Trans.
Spin Up
SpinOK
TCC:001F
EDAC Value = 0000F018E59ED298
SNOOOZZZZZZEEE Retry
EDAC Value = 0000F018E59ED298
SIM Error 2042 LBA 0000000000090FCA FD FC352028
RW Error 00000080
No HOST FIS-ReadyStatusFlags 0002A1A1
ASCII Diag mode
F3 T>

Sometimes TCC shows 001E instead of 001F, but the SIM Error 2042 and RW Error 00000080 remain the same.

What I have tried:

Checked the SATA connection.

Confirmed that the drive spins normally.

Connected through the UART terminal and confirmed that the F3 prompt responds.

Tested with SeaTools, but the drive is not detected.

My goal:

I do not need to recover the data. I am willing to erase the drive completely if necessary. I want to restore the drive to working condition if possible.

I would appreciate advice on the following:

Does this error indicate a corrupted translator or another service-area problem?

Is there a safe, model-specific procedure for repairing the service area on the ST2000VX008 with CV12 firmware?

Would reading or backing up the PCB ROM be useful in this case? Is there an external ROM/EEPROM chip on this PCB?

Is a translator reconstruction command such as m0,2,2,,,,,22 appropriate for this model and firmware, or could it cause further damage?

Could this be a hardware or media problem rather than a firmware issue?

I have found the EasyFix Seagate utility, but I have not executed its repair operations because I cannot confirm that its procedure supports this model and firmware.

Any guidance from someone experienced with Seagate F3 terminal repairs would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello,
this drive has locked terminal, so you can only execute a very limited set of commands. T>m is not one of them.

Indicates a error in the service area of the drive. As the drive is terminal locked there is very little you can do at home without pro tools to unlock the ROM.

i have ch341 that can read the eeprom/bios

There are some ROMs easy to unlock, like these:

ROM locked

ROM unlocked

but yours is somewhat more difficult. Of course it is possible without pro tools, but you need pretty good RE and programming skills to accomplish that.
In fact, it is not even the ROM that needs to be unlocked.

Even if people with the tools did you a favour and unlocked the ROM, it will make no difference unless you then have the tools to work with the drive unlocked.

Without PC3K or MRT, etc you are wasting your time.

When unlocking, a call procedure and an encrypted unlock code are written to the ROM. When the drive starts, a key is issued to the terminal. The PC3000 or MRT then issues a key to decrypt the unlock code in return for this key. Keys are generated randomly (or based on the configuration). Without the utility key, the unlocked ROM is completely useless...

And there's no point in repairing it. A full format will take half a day. If it's successful, it will work for several months. The whole problem with F3 is that the Alt List and translator are in one file...

pepe, 8)
I borrowed their flash-writing code. About eight years ago.
I gave up on HDD repairs and software for them. When the drives got larger than 1 TB.

i does not need a special hardware?

you have 2 options, actually 3:
- you have the know-how to make your unlock solution, then you don't need any special hw
- you don't have that, you need some sw solution, which usually comes with HW like mrt or pc3k
- you let the drive go, sell it for parts or whatever.

a fourth option may be to find somebody with the necessary solution near you and ask to repair your drive, who knows...
