Head exchange

Hy all people here

Im want to know if anyone here, after MHA exchange "Desktop", "laptop" had been a 100% of sucess to get data.

Im dont know because, now im replace head on toshiba MK4018GAP 2 platters 4 heads ,im replace, and be abe to get Data , and some can´t get im think
but after get Data Disk begin to died.



This happend with a Seagate U6 . Does anyone know some about this

Im know afer MHA replacement the new MHA performs positioning its slightly different from the original like factory assembly

these could be result in servo system fail and create BAD sector´s on
surfaces had no defects before.

Head Stack replacement if well done could save almost all the data, but you have to follow strict guidelines, first the environment - clean room, use of antimagnetic tools, exact replacement for the HS assembly and precision. And no hurry !
According to my experience, depending on the drive, positioning of the HSA could be not important or vital depending on the structure of the drive (type). Some drives I think rely just on the servo to position the heads and then you swap the HSA and the drive recalibrates, others require angular adjustment (the HSA is fixed on the top cover and the servo tracks are written when the drive is closed during manufacture). I read an interesting article on this site about the HSA swap.
The higher the recording density, the higher the precision needed for positioning.
Anyway, I think HSA swap is a "last resort" - mandatory if the preamp circuitry is failing.
Probably the pro's in this forum could tell us more on the argument.

Hi,

Should the preamp fail I always replace only the preamp since the drive will operate much better with its original heads and their positions in most models. And there are models very sensitive to position differences like quantums and maxtors.
Of course this applies only if the drive has more than one heads.
