Seagate 120GB Problem

January 29th, 2007, 3:55

Hello all, i'm new here and I have a problem..
I have a Seagate 120GB ATA Model: ST3120022A FirmWare: 3.06 with 2Mb Cache.

Problems appeared some time ago when Windows refused to install on this HDD, or it would install but it would not enter windows.
Then, aften installing Windows on my WD, I viewed my Seagate's SMART status, and it gave errors on some areas like SpinUP and Reallocation SEctor. And it detects it in BIOS but it takes some time to detect it and Windows loads in 2 min with the drive in.

I used MHDD and ran the following commands:
1.CONFIG : it did not work it have errors
2.SMART DATA: partialy worked with CHECKSUM error and 130 ERROR
3.ERASE would not work saying "BROKEN DRIVE"
4.SWITCHMBR or something like that :) gave the same error as above..

I ran a low level format under windows , and now my hdd responds, it ran some SMART tests,CONFIG command under MHDD now works , SMART status was not critical anymore and i can format it now and create partitions..
But it still stays a long time in BIOS,it sees it and stays about 25 seconds..
The READ/Write speed is low, like 3-10 Mbs and under MHDD/ SMART DATA it still gives the error Code 130..

Can someone tell me why in BIOS it sees it and then remains at it for 25 seconds?
What does the Error Code 130 in MHDD / SMART DATA mean?
Are there any chances to fix this HDD?
Please i need some help..best wishes from me

There must be slow or bad sectors on the start of the media abt 0% to 0.2% if there is any problem with these areas then drive takes time to detect .

thank you for your answer , is there any way to fix bad sectors?I can use HDD Regenerator but it looks like it take a few days..is there any other way?

use mhdd or victoria hdd regenrator is heck slow if the data is not important use write erasing in victoria that may fix ur drive .

It may be caused by too many bad sectors or other serious problem, you should add into P-list.

7200.7 ST3120022A 120G LBA---234441648 Physical head----3 Platter---2 logical cinder---16383 logical head---16 logical sector----63 sector byte---512 cache--2 7200 ATA
But I am not sure because i can not imagine your problem.

MHDD doesn't work it won't let me erase / format the drive saying that "broken Hard disk" or something like that.I haven't tried Victoria..i will i guess.
i will post again if i solve something

I think there is some firmware problem with this hard drive .

February 4th, 2007, 12:17

you have a point here but i don't know where and if i can replace the firmware, i suppose i need some special cable or device for this..

u need special tools not just cable u can use salvation data or pc3k pci for repairing the firmware or u can use terminal commands .
