I had an issue with a dead drive a week ago and managed to recover my files, however the donor hdd is acting kinda strange.

I had Vista installed on it but when i tried to format it on WinXP it said that it could not complete the format. Now i have tested it with an extended test, then zero filled the drive with Maxtors Powermax and partitioned it with Partition magic 8. All tests were OK.. and i have a healthy drive.

The drive is OK but after a few hours of working it gives corrupt data and said that i need to format it again. File system is RAW.

It's the 3rd time it happened and i need some professional advice. Can it be because it's gets very hot ?

I had one like this a while ago.

Turned out to be a slight bad connection on the IDE connector.

Quick dab with the soldering irion on each pin of the connector and so far, so good!

Might be worth a look.

But I wouldn't store anything too valuable on it, just in case.

It is strongly recommended to use active cooling for the current generation of HDDs. Heat can cause really ugly things in HDDs, and it can be the cause of your problem also.
