Yes it knocks, then displays HM REG701 8B, then knocks again and displays the same.
After a long time doing this, it displays:
ERR Read Boot Adapts
and puts me back to the "F" prompt

It seems like a firmware issue, but I cannot get that far to issue any commands.

It is the first time I am seeing this error. It doesnt sound like head damage as there is no other head type sounds like screeching.

I am open to any suggestions on how to proceed.
Thanks

Its a 160GB SATA with Apple firmware codes. I unfortunately do not have a donor PCB on hand. I was hoping someone had seen this output from terminal before and could say whether they have had any success in retrieving data after the error.

My concern is that the "ERR Read Boot Adapts" means the adaptive paramaters pertaining specifically to that drive are damaged or missing. Then anything I do (even replace heads) would be a waste of time.

What exactly does "ERR Read Boot Adapts" mean?

Thanks
