I want to do something similar;
Say for example I know a HD has some type of problem when spinnin, (head, motor, etc), sounds like two metals bordering each other when spinnin and I want to know which head(s) is causing the problem, so I can depop it.

How can I do this?

If you have a clean room or can arrange for a clean environment, the best is to see inside if the platters are scratched. If there is a scracth or you see air filter full of dust drive could not be used anymore, with same heads or less heads...

If there is noise, there is contact. Or it could be the motor.

Hello Pijomax,

Beside the way you just explained is there anyother way where you dont have to physically open the HD to know which of the head (for example) is causing the noise when the HD spinns?

On the HD Doctor for Seagate's Manual they explain how you depop a head once you know which one(s) is defective.
They are not clear ( in my opinion ) how to know which one is the bad one.

This is how the manual tells you when there miht be a problem with the heads
for example: after a SELFSCAN test the value AGE stays the same XX that is a sign that there is a possible problem with the heads
another example: If when scanned by MHDD there are continuos errors then one or more head driver has an error

then they explain how to perform a depop, but knowing which head (in this case is the defective one)

Im struggling a bit, any help will come in handy

Thanks in advance>

Do this in terminal
T>/2
2>H0
Head 0 (if head 0 is ok it will echo itself)
2>H1
Head1 (if head 1 is ok it will echo itself)
2>H2
error will come if head 2 is having error.
