Hi everyone,

I managed to power my WD5000AAKS with wrong power supply or wrong connection. Subsequently frying ST L6284 motor controller chip on pcb.

I bought donor WD5000AAKS drive to swap PCB but that didn't work. Drive did start up but computer didn't pick it up. Damaged model is WD5000AAKS 00YGA0 but donor's number ended with 00A7B0. PCB layout looked slightly different as well.

I've tried to find matching drive but no success :( Date on the sticker says 21 Nov 2007.. so, relatively old.

Not sure what could be done? Can motor controller chip be swapped? Seems pretty delicate task! Is it something that only technician can do?

Hi,

The donor board wasn't compatible because it is of a different series.
Even if U find a close donor the PCB swap will not be successful probably because of the adaptive parameters stored in the CPU.
So either U will have to repair the burnt board or place the CPU from the bad board to the good one (a matching one!), provided it is not toasted as well.

that sucks:( I wonder if its possible to buy just L6284 motor controller chip

I've come across http://www.hkinventory.com that lists something L6284-3.1 made by ST. Price seems to range from $10 to $50 (I wonder if its US$?)

Hi,

When U try to swap the CPU, you need a matching layout too.

If i remember right, the VCD chip has a big pin on the backside!
A pin and heatsink, but need the good connection.

Do you checked the preamp for short circuit?
If it burnt too, easily can break the cpu on the good pcb again!

Good luck,
Janos

A power supply problem may have ruined the entire board, so you may be wasting your time trying to repair it.

OTOH, since you don't have the gear for reading and programming EEPROM, your best bet wt this point would be to try to swap the motor IC and maybe you'll be lucky.

If you don't have experience changing out SMT chips then take it to someone who does.

Jon
