i am working on a drive that has lost some folders from the desktop due to apower outage in the building. there ere 3 folders missing that contained a mix of word, excel, pdf and power point files, i have been able to successfully recover the directories and can see all the files in them, however any time i click on any of the files thay cant be opened, or i get just junk all over the screen, i have tried all the usual nucleus kernel, word repair tools and they cant recover or fix the file.
as a general point all other files that were on the desktop that were not deleted are working with no issues.
i would really love to hear if anyone has any idea about getting these files working correctly.

thx in advance.

Hi,

my first idea is that they got overwritten by the OS, I would check the FS to see which file occupies the space originally allocated for those files.
If the user didn't realize the data loss imediately and used the computer further, the OS can write to the affected non allocated arrea.

thx Pepe

to my knowledge this happened some time over the weekend when theyre was a power outage and when the customer realised this on tuesday which was the first working day for him back at the machine he saw he lost his files, as to whether he tried self recovery or not i am not sure or if he tried using the machine i would most likely say he did as i only recieved the call late in the afternoon.
assuming he has used the pc is it likely i can still get some file back?

can you lpease clarify a bit about FS

thank you

you might also look in the found directory "found.000" etc.
if there was a power outage , more than likely when the system rebooted , chkdsk ran ...
If he is running vista, the files might not be where you expect them to be .Try R-studio or getdataback .. winhex may also help.

As always .. image the drive before attempting a recovery

Yes, Pepe is right. If you used the pc after the data loss, the data may be overwritten.
I think the FS is short for File System.
You may use the Raw mode of the recovery software to recover data. What is the software you use to recover data?
