scan got through 5.6% and then gave me ???
would not continue.
I'm going to try it again later. I've read the documentation, the faq, and the various forum topics, really don't know what to do next.
Ideas?

So i retired the scan and it ran all night. I can't remember the exact numbers but basically there were mostly sector reporting back at < 3, 10 , 50 ms. There was 1 at <150 ms and then when it got to somewhere around 16,000,000 is started giving me ?time results which got to 77 before I shut it down this morning.
So I'm guessing these are the bad areas on the disc, what do I do now? So I tell it to start scanning at some number say 17,000,000 to the end and see if the rest of the disc is good. I'm assuming that the fact that it reports back anything at all tells me that the head is moving ok.
Thanks for any help you can give. Again I don't mean to anger anyone of the professionals or suggest that they are not worth their fee. If this disc held important data that was irreplaceable I would pay up and be thankful. But this is more of a learning challenge to help me understand computers better since they are my hobby and I enjoy learning. So thanks for any help and please don't be offended.

Image the drive. Do it sooner rather than later. Bad drives don't get better, they get worse.
My previous post has hints on what to do next.

Thanks. I will start reading about that.

tried to image the drive. It said rescued 3337 MB, errsize 56674 MB Errors 1, ipos 3337 MB, opos 3337 MB. I guess it only rescued 3.3 GB of the 60 GB drive so I'm hosed. Ready to accept defeat unless someone has any other suggestions. Thanks for the help you gave me.

Hi,
it seems the imaging stopped at the first sector causing error. I suggest imaging with such settings that will continue uppon errors.

you need to image with better tools, unfortunately those options cost between 3 and 6KUS$. someone here near to you would probably do the job well for between 300 and 1000US$. Where are you?

Thanks for the help pepe, I've tired of spending hours doing this and it just isn't worth thousands or even more than a couple hundred to get the data. It can mostly be redone. I had some talks on powerpoint that will be tough to replace, but the pix were all saved elsewhere, the music can be ripped from cd. The outlook files were backed up on exchange, so all i really lost was a password file that was several pages long and will be tough to replace but its my fault so what can I say. I tried using ddrescue on sysrescuecd and it chocked after just 3 gb on a 60 gb drive. THanks to everyone for their help. I appreciate trying to help a neophyte when most of you are professionals.
