I was connecting this HDD when all in the same instant, I noticed I was putting the power connector on backwards, the computer turned itself on, and I saw a spark as the terminals collided. Now then, the HDD doesn't spin up, and causes no problems with the computer when it is connected. It is treated as if it's not connected at all.
When the power connector is reversed, +5v gets overvolted with +12v.
My hope and dream was to replace whatever little SMD component is immediately downstream of the +5v if there is one. I have not been able to follow the traces with my continuity tester so far. So I really think one of the traces in one of the inner layers of the PCB has burnt up; I cannot find continuity from the power lead to anything on the board except a few capacitors on the lower left and a very small group of bare soldered traces on the upper left corner. I will continue to muck around hunched over like this with my stupid little red multi-tester, but if it's a burnt trace, I'll not figure it out on my own.

Fried pcb. Better and faster try with an identical one. If drive clicks or makes a 'musical' sound preamp is gone (call a dr expert then or say bye to data)

If any of those 'Capacitors' has a big 0 on it, you've found at least one of your problems.

I am interested in a new PCB. Someone said I may have to transfer the firmware regardless of finding an exact match. Who should I pick to do this?

Not in this drive.
You need to find a maching pcb!

If you need the data from this drive then go and find an exact matching drive & pcb.
If you don't need the data then go and buy a new replacement drive of any make or size.

The one with the big 0 is resistance .
Give me the 5 digit number on the pcb i will check for pcb in my stock .
