Most probably the drive does not click or click at startup then emergency exit and recognised as alias. Time to repair firmware or disk...

Have also seen this as PCB failure or wrong ROM.

Could either be. Rom corrupted or read channel k.o. - usually I think about SA failure but I remember these drives were somewhat prone to strange ROM issues or malfunctions.

I also have one of these 80gb drives with what seems to be the same problem.

It will make several very loud knocks and then go quiet. Then any attempt to access the drive will produce the same loud knocking.
It is recognised as a 40gb Sabre
The drive serial number is incorrect.

Nobody has messed with this drive so I don't think its a pcb problem.
I would think my drive problem is likely to be the same as with the original as posted by celica.

I have seen a drive that was screwed up after a "simple PCB replacement" - so said the customer, originally it was maybe a simple problem, after the "replacement" the drive spin up, the speed goes faster and lower two times then spin down , eventually knocks but not always. Maybe this ?

Your ONLY option having an EXACT REPLACEMENT and assuming you take the risk to fry the new pcb too in case of internal damage, is to try to change the PCB. Otherwise, if it is the firmware you need an equipment which costs about 10'000 $ and the knowledge how to operate it (DON'T ASK TO GUIDE YOU!), if the problem is the headstack, need clean room and the tooling and skill to change it, plus the EXACT replacement and maybe some adjustment. At this point you need a tool to extract data.
I don't think the data is SUPER IMPORTANT otherwise you should have contacted a pro to do it, maybe is super important to you but you cannnot afford the price for a complete professional DR. At your options : do any attempt by yourself and maybe screw drive and data forever, or hire a pro.
