maybe someone can advise...
i managed to put the 4pin power plug in upside down on my western digital caviar wd800 ide hdd.(i know,i know.worn molex connector on a usb to ide cable-went in surprisingly easily)
now it wont spin up on power up.silence.
what, if any, is the power protection on this model?
is there a diode i can replace on the controller board?
its one of those situations where the data probably doesnt warrant professional recovery but it would be great it back !
any thoughts?

Hi,

I would be surprised if it is only a suppressor in this case.
Very likely the preamplifier and/or heads are gone also.
You can use a multimeter to track down shorts on the power-supply line, and simply remove the TVR's. If you cannot find any shorts any more, then try to repower.
If shorts remain, even after removal of TVR, then there is much more damage.

if drive still not work you got to swap ROM from original drive to new pcb

In the upperleft of the picture you see a number engraved in the pcb.
Try to buy a pcb with same number and change the 8-pin eeprom with the original one.
If you drive is clicking then, then 99% sure heads or preamp is damaged.

hi all,
still plugging away here.
swapped the pcb in from another wd800.now spins up
pc cant read data yet though.but can see the drive in bios,although cant populate the volumes list.
havent swapped eprom chip yet..is there anything i can check prior to getting the soldering iron out?
how do i dentify a blown TVR?

No, you need to get a soldering iron at this point.
If you can show a good quality pic from the under side (component side), we can show you the TVS.
If you have a dmm, you can check it.

You need to check the D3, D4.
If not short any of these, the problem is more bigger.

If at this point it spins up and does not click that's a good sign.

also is everything ok with the six pin component just below d4?it looks "crispy".

They should give NO continuity; if they do, something is wrong (or they could be connected to an inductor in parrallel).
These are diodes. If you hesitate, thake them out of the circuit to check.
In any case, never bridge them, since they are part of the power-supply.
In any case, i think this is way over your possibilities. I would suggest a pro.
If you do continue on your own, you are things could go terribly wrong.

ah sorry, pardon my ignorance.i thought they were thermal varistors-as that is what the previous posts were relating too.
in which case d4 is fine but d3 is showing continuity.
i'm not going pro as the data is not important enough to spend the money on.
its true i am attempting something above my current ability,but how else will i learn?im ok with a soldering iron and have a good multimeter,and it doesnt matter if it all goes terribly wrong.all i need is good advice.
any help received with thanks.

Looking at the photo the component (with 6 pins?) located between c57 and d3 either looks fused or is it covered with a bit of sponge insulation?
