Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi,
A friend of mine got a 250gb HDD in a USB enclosure, which stopped working few days ago. It's a weird brand - Platinum, at least the sticker on the hdd has that brand printed on. I think it's a Maxtor because the logic board is CALYPSOIII 301599100 ARDENT C8C1.
I attached the hard drive to a PC on an IDE cable, and it IS recognized by the BIOS (as PLATINUM 250G 8F7200 YAR41BW0). However, it is not recognized by Windows and Linux. I also tried SUPER FDISK, but it told me it could not read the MBR and partitions.
When the PC is started, you can feel that the HDD is spinning (it is vibrating), but it does not stop vibrating (it spins at very fast speed all the time). There are no sounds (clicking, ticking, etc).
What do you think the problem is? If it's the logic board, how do I identify a possible replacement? There is a sticker on the side reading:
Platinum 133 7200-8M-F
04H000050609
Please help

Its most likely a refurbished Maxtor 6Y250P0. Try to scan it with MHDD or Victoria for windows to see if the surface is readable. Might be a deleted partition or something simple other than the drive itself.

thanks for your quick reply.
I run MHDD, and it gave me the same error all the way through - >500ms.
I IDed it, and the only additional info was
SN 020500002
BIOS 80H
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Were there any patterns in the scan or was every sector >500ms? Did you check smart for relocated sectors?

In MHDD, when you see the !!!!! don't you see the "PWD" flag on the top?
I vote for password protected case + hdd.

For smart: Press F8!
The important 2 lines:
Reallocated sectors, Current pending
PS: Sorry for PM.

(unfortunately, i have found the PM button first.

If you do change the PCB, make sure you change the pcb for a PC3000 and Salvation Data HD Doctor. Thats a good swap but you will need to buy another pcb.

Like Doomer and all people told u looks like a SA problem, by this reason u got ABRT error at all sectors registers FW stored in platters at zone reserved area negative cilinders, wich had modules corrupted,to solved u need tools wich could access -cyl , works with vendor tracks & vendor commands and of course knowledgment about the structure of SA at this model to repair it and get data back , or send to a DR company near to u country

"near to u country" ???
Please don't do that!

You know, there are a lot of amateur DR companies...
Please suggest one trustable, or one of us instead.
Now i can see too, translator is the problem.
