WD2000JD, got equal HDD and PCB

July 16th, 2010, 11:29

Hi,

I just got a equal model of my WD2000JD in the mail.
On my broken one, I got one chip fried.

Just to try out, I changed the working pcb on my defect HDD.

So, the computer boots and the HDD motor runs again :-)
But after it spins, the HDD makes click noises.
So I switched off the pc after 3 clicks right away.

I think these are good signs?

Now I have to swap the bios from the one to the other.
Hopefully that will be the final solution.

It is not BIOS it is ROM that needs to be swapped. If you do not know how to soilder watch out. Find post on guy from Greece and see what he has done when he tried to move the chips over to the new PCB board. You might want to check out a DR company close to you and have them do this one for you. It should be a cheap repair at this point. If you mess this one up oh well. You should know the story after this one.

dont wanna mess that rom up!

Or any electronics workshop as this chip is rather easy to swap. The moto controller and most MCUs are a different chapter as they have large thermal pads below them which requires lots of hear especially for PbF solder. Small (0402) SMD components may make their way if soldering is not done properly.

In this case, I bet that the preamp is fried.

The ROM is generally SO8 package. Hot air pencil is needed. If you mess it up and loose the data in ROM you are out of luck. But this is the next step. Local Ham/electronics club may help but take a look at the quality of there equipment before you start. Guy's that know what they are doing buy good solder/de-solder equipment (Weller, etc.)

Alright, I understand your concern.

I got a hot air gun and did it myself.

The results are not really exciting.

Information:
First I put the PCB from the new model on the broken HDD. Result = HDD spins again, but makes click noises after it spins.

Now I changed the ROM (U12) from the old PCB to the new PCB. Result = HDD doesn't spin, nothing happens.

I thougth I messed up that ROM, but after I put the original ROM on the PCB, the new HDD works fine and the broken one with this PCB behaves like my frist step.

So I didn't destroy anything.
Might the Rom been broken before due to a over voltage?

NEW UPDATE:
I changed the ROM again, so now the old ROM is on the new PCB.
I connect the HDD, and now it spins, but also makes click noises again.
What next??

Or you cooked the eeprom or didn't get it attached properly

Next : if everything else fails, send to a pro. And expect supplemental charge.

Most of the times in these drives, the problem is elsewhere....

What can save money and frustration : diagnose.

yes, the pro. i really dont have 600 euro left for this.

what kind of diagnose?
don't i need a external device for that?

Hmmm one thing I thought about is to change that bigger chip....

anyone ever tried that?

the chip with the red arrow is the one that fried.

so I would replace this one with the one from the new PCB

Ok, the IC labeled U12 is the ROM. Get another identical board and swap this IC. But you may have grater problems than that. The Marvell IC with the smoke missing is the interface to the preamp so if it sacrificed itself and didn't let the preamp (inside the HDA) get fried you have a chance. But otherwise :(

He already did that and the drive still clicks.

Well, now you know that the problem is on the inside.

It does not sound like it's a problem with the electronics. You pretty much went as far as you can go. Either wright it off as a loss or put it in the shelf till you can afford to pay for the recovery.

I doubt you'll even get this done by a pro for €600, if (and I bet it is) the preamp is gone :-(

Hi,

At this point the best u can do is saving money. The more u mess with the drive the more it will cost.
PM sent.

So, just to get this right:

Nobody tried to replace the U7 chip?
(The fried one)

I know that would be harder, because this chip has more pins. But I think there would be no data necessary saved on that chip. So it might work?!

You already tried the new pcb with your old rom. There's no point.
