Hi everyone, thanks and sorry for my bad english in advance:

Due to an error i applied 12v instead 5v and 5v instead 12v to the power contact of my HDD.

I tried the damaged HDD with other PCB from the same model as mine, result: the hard disk spins, but it's not detected by BIOS or S.O, i don't know if this is due because of a distinct firmware (one PCB is from 2011/09 and the other from 2010/10)

Anyway i bought other PCB in a website (i don't know the date of fabrication) of the same model but with this one the HD does not spin. I suspect that they sold it to me with the VCM Controller broken.

Then with my damaged PCB, the TVS diode of 5v was visibly damaged so i remove it, then i plugged the HDD and it made a kind of bleeping sound at regular intervals. Then i soldered a thin wire in place of diode. I conected the HDD with an IDE/SATA USB adapter and i noticed a fast overheating in molex wires of the power supply of this adapter and finally the power supply exploded.

Please i appreciate any help, i have the work of a whole year in this hard disk.

Seek a professional recovery.
If you keep blindly trying DIY you will probably lose all chances of getting your data back.
Practice on other drives first - Do not put your data at risk & practice on this drive.

If the preamp is damaged then your out of luck with DIY as it will need to be opened in a cleanroom enviourment (with the relevent experience & tools) & have the head stack replaced from a compatible donor drive.

Hi Loki and thank you for your response. When i talk about work i mean personal work, i have no job xD. And of course i have not money to spend 1000€ or so. This is the cause of my despair and seek for help here. I try to read and learn before triying DIY but now i'm lost.

No worries everyone has to start out with the basics & DIY has its risks.

The best sugestion I will give you would be to send off the drive to a pro for a free evaluation, it might not be as much as you think?
& if you dont have the money now for the cost of the recovery you can always place the drive somewhere safe until you do have the money. It all depends on how much money you place on your data.

You dont get a broken spindle from inserting the power connection the wrong way. You need to think logically ie a fall/drop can cause a spindle to break.
Inserting the power cable the wrong way can damage things like the PCB, preamp/heads or maybe the spindle coil windings?

There are some highly recommended forum members ie Northwind, PCimage. I'm sure you will get a few PM's from them & other members, just a note I think you need more than 10 posts to be able to send PM's

Just for the benefit of anyone who reads this thread in future:

Replacing a TVS diode with a piece of wire is always a bad idea. The results are unpredictable (as they will depend on the characteristics of the power supply, the type of wire used to replace the diode, the type of wire used for the power supply connection etc. etc.), but could cause a fire and will never "fix the problem". Don't do it.

What a pity not to hear that before Vulcan. So i have to replace the diode with other exactly as the replaced? Beacause if i don't put anything in place of diode the hard disk makes a bleeping sound at regular intervals (This with the PCB broken one, not the bought one nor the PCB from the other HDD).

Their are plenty of posts here regarding TVS diodes & none of them say to bridge it with wire.
Sometimes a fuse goes on a PCB & fzabkar has mentioned before in posts that you can bridge it with wire or solder but never on a TVS diode.

A TVS diode is for over voltage protection. If either the 12v or the 5v has been damaged then as long as there is no other damage you would have had two options:

1, Just remove the faulty TVS diode & then see if the drive spins up, but be warned you will have no voltage protection
2, Remove the faulty TVS diode & solder a replacement one in its place

If in doubt always ask first for help.

a) DIY recovery attempts always carry risks, including the type which you have found, unfortunately. Some of us have been accused of giving too many warnings about doing DIY, by people saying that the risks are obvious and so the warnings are unnecessary. I'm sorry to see that you've shown such warnings are still useful, because not everyone recognises that there are risks.

b) There are lots of ways in which people can (and have) done more damage while attempting DIY, due to a lack of experience, knowledge, tools etc. (although, to give a balanced comment, there have also been some DIY successes). If you're unsure about something, then ask before doing it. If you had asked, then there are people here who could have replied and told you not to replace the TVS diode with wire.

Anyway, your problem is now bigger than just a TVS - the reason for my previous posting was to try to make a clear point, in the hope that it might help someone else in the future. Good luck!

So i have a PCB (the one from the other hard disk) that spins out the hard disk but is not being reconiced the damaged disk with this one PCB. Ideas? swap the rom?

Replacing the TVS with a piece of wire is a pretty good solution to protect the drive from any voltage coming from the PSU
the drive will be safe and sound, however surely it will not sound spinning at all.
Instead, your PSU will emitt nice sounds, smells, have u by any chance recorded the procedure? U shall share it with us, in [link=http://forum.hddguru.com/fun-stuff-f9.html]here[/link]

Honestly, if you need your data back u need pro help, not just ideas, since it seems that if u get ideas u can still screw things up on your own.
