Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hello,
For past year, I've been browsing this forum to play with my olds HDD's but never had to recover anything, today things have changed.
I broke my HDD. USB connector was bend and now drive does not power up.
I can't fix it with my micro-soldering skills, I tried but no luck, looks like there's several lines damaged. I tried to read the Winbond ROM and that works. I've wrote the ROM to another 800067 PCB, same Winbond ROM (I saved it before) and I connected that PCB to the broken drive... no luck.
What am I doing wrong ?
Thank you for your help and for all the great information shared on this board.

If you upload your ROM dump, I can test it for you.

I'm afraid to say something wrong, very wrong.
But isn't that drive SED?
If so, and your only issue is a cracked connector, you might wanna find someone who can replace it for you.

Here are the ROM.
ROM from cracked PCB
ROM from working PCB.
The size is different but I have no error when writing the cracked one to the working one.

This is because your "damaged" ROM wasn't fully read. The correct size is the one of your "good" ROM. Additionally, you might run into trouble by simply replacing the PCB on a Charger with a ROM swap. You might have to transfer other components too.

can you post pic of label on your patient disk?

I've read again the ROM (ROM attached below), size is correct now, thank you Northwind. I wrote it on donor PCB and connect to the drive, it's slightly better but I can't access data. My PC can see it's connected, it's 2TB but no partition.

This is the older series, should be working with replacement pcb after rom transfer.
But, as Northwind pointed out, the patient rom was not fully read, only the first 256KB. It should be 1MB as the donor's dump.

Thank you Pepe. The second read was ok, 1024, same size as original. I've post is on the post above, does it look incorrect ?

check in disk manager, does it show correct capacity?
I saw you got SN, which is a good sign, but capacity should be ok as well.

Isn't the SN taken from the PCB in these drives?

So in disk manager, it does not see the disk, it says " do you want to initialize MBR or GPT" and then it fail. R-Studio can see size and ID but there's no partition so I can not scan anything.

You may also give DMDE a try.
If it gives you an error reading sectors from the beginning, then you have a serious problem. ( Also if it gives zeros then it's another story )

Doesn't look good. Not sure why.

that's why i asked for a pic of sector editor.
But that error in DMDE is not very encouraging :s
