Please help - WD10EAVS-00d7b1

Hi guys, I'm new, and I came here because I didn't know where else to turn.
I got a power surge and my hard drive died. I have ordered a new PCB to transplant, but I am scared that the ROM chip on my hard drive may have been the thing that died, and if that is the case then I don't know what to do about it. The hard drive is a WD Green Caviar 1TB, and the rom chip is a Marvell. I was wondering if anybody here could help me once the PCB arrives in 3 weeks. Thank you.

Fazlinovic, U12 marking on PCB is typical where ROM chip is located, but it may be unpopulated on your board. I think the ROM is embedded in the MCU (Marvell) on your model. However, if U12 is populated it should be moved from the source PCB to the replacement.

If I was you, I would attempt to fix the source PCB otherwise you may need to take the drive to a DR company. ROM can be regenerated using tools like PC3000. It's also possible source ROM can still be read out from MCU in kernel mode or using term with special tools.

When you say "power surge and my hard drive died" what condition was the drive in after the surge? Can you upload a picture of the damaged PCB?

If damage is limited to PCB, data should be recoverable even if ROM is lost.

WebClaw, Thanks for the response, the power surge was me being an absolute idiot and plugging in 20W instead of the required 12.... the ROM is imbedded in the MCU chip, that is what I originally meant, and when I plug it into a hard drive reader, the light that indicates that the reader is working goes out. My concern is that if my marvell chip is broken, i wont be able to use the donor PCB to access it anyways.....

A photo would help a lot. IIUC, you plugged a 20V adaptor into a 12V external WD drive. Typically this causes the 12V TVS diode (D4) to go short circuit.

Hi Fazlinovic - not to sound like a broken record, but your case sounds like you'll need some tools which you may not have. If it's possible to isolate / remove damage from the PCB (see fzabkar's excellent writeup) so the MCU starts up a DR company can read the native ROM by jumpering your damaged PCB and the can write it to your donor PCB.

That said, it may be easier for a DR tech just to regenerate the ROM using a donor PCB and a loader. Assuming there is no other damage (eg: toasted preamp or encryption) a data recovery company in Canada would charge around in the range of $200 - $500 Canadian (maybe a bit cheaper if you're providing a working PCB they don't have for some reason). I am not aware of the price points in the USA.

Last point I'll make is that most DR labs don't "fix"; they'll get your drive up and running long enough to make a copy onto a new HDD (though I do understand your reason to attempt a self-repair).

The OP has made no mention of any visible damage. Therefore, it could be that R64 is intact, in which case the simple solution would be to snip the 12V TVS diode, and there would be no need to replace the PCB.

fzabkar, Here is a photo, the board seems fine to me, but if it wasn't a problem with the PCB then the drive would at least show up as active when plugged in..

Get hold of a multimeter, just like it says in my FAQ, and take some measurements. Or if you want to take a punt, snip diode D4. You will save both your drive and your data.

The zero-ohm resistor is the thing with a "0" on it. The diode is the thing between the resistor and the SATA connector.

Snip the metal pins close to the body of the diode, then remove the diode.
