Hi,

My WD400 Western Digital HDD is damage and I need help to recover important data. This is what happened:

I was using the PC when it freezed so I had to Swith it OFF. When I turned it back ON, it boots no more saying "insert system disk....". I went to the BIOS and HDD is still recognised, so I put it to another working PC as a secondary master, went to BIOS of the other PC and the HDD is recognised as secondary master and it also recognised by windows as a new HDD. However, I can't see it listed on "My Computer".

I ran "disk management" utility and it only listed my primary hdd. I confirmed that my WD400 is listed in the "Device Manager" as "WDC "WD400EB 00CPF0", why it is not listed in disk management?

Please help.

Thanks in advance,

Garry

Hi Garry,

It is not listed because probably the boot record somehow got corrupted.

In order to get your data back, you can try to edit the boot sector manually (very difficult and only for experienced people) or you can use some of the commercially available programs to recovers files from a lost partition.

Mostly you can download a demo-version so you can verify if it can find your data back.
I would recommend this option.

It is also possible your harddisk developped bad sectors, and in that case you better contact a datarecovery company.

Best regards,

Dobre

Correct Amarbir, I overlooked that.

I cannot think what could cause this, except perhaps SA problem.

I would check the partition table

Or is sector 0 is bad, this can occur.

Download a demo of something like "GetDataBack", see if that can see it.

How can I check the partition table if the disk is not listed in the disk management utility? It is something very strange and it's one of a kind problem I encountered. Normally, if BIOS recognised the disk it should be listed in the disk management but not in this case. I'm a bit convince with pcimage comment about damaged track 0, I will try "GetDataBack" and let you guys know the result.

Thanks for all your inputs.

you can also get ntexplorer also from runtime.
The trial version will let you examine the drive if it can be read

You are right Amarbir, it should show in Disk Management.... that's why i said it is one of a kind problem that I encountered. I have tried it on 3 different machines but all of them detects it in BIOS and listed in Device Manager but not in Disk Management.

Strange isn't it?

Garry

This is what I get when on partial scan:

"I/O Error Unknown error (27) reading sector 10000 on HD 129: Do you want to continue?"

If I continue, it says this message on each sectors:

"Error 27 in HD129. During ReadLba: LAB=<sector number> CHS=-lx-lx-l, Cnt=64"

Does it mean that all sectors are damage?

Garry

Run A scan with MHDD and check all your sectors

MHDD can't recognize the drive parameters and end-up with "Drive is not ready" error.

Yes, the Jumper is on PM2 and detected as Secondary Master in the BIOS.

Hmm, could be that the translator and/or P-List is unreadable/corrupt.

I wouldn't really recommend you buggering around with that, unless you havethe right tools and knowledge.

Where are you based?
