Master password is not freely on the net. And probably 90% of people don't actualy know the passwords used. So easy to say that people don't have master password for HGST drives with ICES/SECI modules

Listen up : there are free services that can effetively unlock HDDs , but you'll lose everything on it. If you need to unlock it without loss of data, then - at your option - learn how these drives work , find a way (and there is) to unlock it, pay someone else who knows how to do it.

If you would come here and ask for unlocking, I'll give you something to sign and return , declaring under your responsibility that you are the owner of the drive, or you have permission to access data and you would be the sole responsible of the use of unlocked drive. An image of the label of the drive would be included in the signed agreement.

And I'll never disclose the unlocking procedure because in the wrong hands (assuming having at hand the right tools to gain access to what is needed) it can be used for illegal purpose. Sorry.

Well, finally clear enough man :) and I appreciate you words.

My purpose is to change hd serial in order to use it with "hd-locked-OS" such as the ones in new portable multimedia players (hitachi & toshiba are my main goals) because I do not like the idea to have a unit locked to a particular hardware (fragile as fragile are hds) because if it fails all the unit must be trashed (usually they also are expensive) so my UNIQUE aim is to be able to change the serial number of an hard drive (that is MINE) replacing it with the one of the original failed hd (this one also mine). I do not consider this illegal while "unlocking" the unit OS can so be considered because you go and modify PROPRIETARY software.

About hd-lock I TOTALLY agree with you (even if very few people know the possibility of hd locking mostly because this feature had lately been implemented in motherboards bios and is UNDOCUMENTED when you buy a drive): lock is a VERY POWERFULL way to protect your data and this is the only field of hdd recovery in which I agree with "secretness", even if in some cases there are "unpredictable automatic hdd locking" such is in some new samsung 2.5' netbook device in which a master password should solve the problem... but you cannot have that password because no one can know if you really own that drive and you must return the unit directly to the reseller or samsung.

For now I thank you for your answer, hope to speak with you again in a very clear way :) .

I think there are two or three camps on these forums.

1: Business (People who work 5-6 days a week all day and sometimes all night to put bread on table and NEED to protect their secrets) Me, BlackST, Doomer, etc etc
*2: Hobbyists (People who want free info and also want to share this info with everyone)BGMan, SPildit
3: Genuine people who have lost data and need a little help

*Have income from their main job and don't see any strategic importance in keeping what ever they phish

Agree? Welcome to add your views.............

I think it's my English
I'd better say I has lived in Eastern Europe for 30 years
But now I am in Chicago, so you can continue blaming if it makes you happy

It doesn't make me happy, it makes me pity....
I've spent two years near Chicago and I do know how it looks like....
Don't let them take your soul, Doomer !

P.S. I do appreciate the software you have created ! It is freeware, isn't it ?

BGman - I've finally read the whole thread and now I don't really know should I laugh, or weep, or both.
But I definitely pity you.

Such an arrogant and narrow minded person is hard to find in the modern world.
You sound like my "History of KPSS (or CPSU)" teacher.
No surprize you didn't survive in the States.

I was in the US on a contract with an university. I did my job and returned back to my family. There is nothing about surviving....

You know nothing about me and you say that I'm arrogant and narrow minded person.
Why? Who do you think you are!

I'm finished with this topic as it's stupid and sadly gives this person a box to stand on and speak.

Some people from USA and UK, coming to Italy and seeing art, towns, what people have etc. often say : "with all this, how can Italians be COMMUNISTS ?" :D

(my contribution to the debate started by Guru)

Btw... Я говорю немного русский, хотели бы ее улучшить. (I speak "a little" Russian, I would like to improve .... damn keyboard....)

Have a good day !

With Russian language I can happily read and understand 40% of conversation. When my mother in-law visits I forget everything!

Sorry guys,

I didn't mean to hurt anybody!
But, you know, sometimes the truth hurts....

If somebody is going out of business, it's not my fault and I'm not the one to blame...

I'm not a comunist, just the opposite. And I didn't say that the greed is a bad thing :D
Some greed is good for the business, but not SO much greed...

And remember the name of this site is hddguru.com
The real guru's teach and help ordinary people asking nothing in return !!!

If you choose a nickname "guru" it doesn't make you a real guru, does it !

I don't consider myself a guru or a pro, but I'm not a newbie either , Mr Guru of Egypt...
