I'm sorry you saw my previous post :(
I didn't want to scare you
Anyway once you saw it...
It is almost impossible to decide on log what would be exact cause of such failure
It can be PCB, heads or media damage
You need to check all :)
Most likely it's heads problem (from personal experience)

This one is not a Mac(thankfully), but we are also an apple warranty site. I have seen a lot of them go through.. Funny thing is that people who buy Apple are also the least likely to pay for recovery services. You buy the most expensive computers known to man but cheap out when your life's work is going to be lost... I could go into political tirade now but will spare you all ;)

Just to post a followup. It was a damaged head, unfortunately for the client there is media damage as well. The damage is at the very inside of the top platter. I installed a limiter on the actuator and powered up. While the drive is the same firmware revision and country code, I was getting an incompatible preamp id 00. Are there any pther identifiers I should have looked for? Is this th emodel with the SA in the middle of the platters? The client turned down the recovery, so if there is an "post mortem" follow up you guys would like, let me know..
Thanks for everything
Shawn

Wow... The preamp ID 00 was because the preamp could not be detected. While moving the heads back to the donor drive I noticed I had not taken the old gasket off! Put heads back for the 2nd time.. Switches to full init. Now will not come ready.

Also just to compare;
There are no "spin unstable" errors with the new heads.

This means Pepe was dead on.

Thank you for letting me know!

Was I dead?? :shock: I haven't noticed anything... Maybe I am still dead? I should look for some convincing evidence :)
