Thanks once again to everyone who replied. Now that I've talked privately to rchadwick, I'm leaning towards OnTrack. My next question is, what is a reliable, dependable external HD that you all can recommend to replace my WD P.O.S.?

External boxes are always poor in quality, especially the power supply. P.s. They are not intended for continuous service.

for what its worth, though, the 500gb western digitals have been more failure prone than most.

I like Acomdata PureDrive.
Easy to open (two philips screws), eSata interface, Samsung drive inside.

I've referred 3 of my customers with clicking 500GB WD drives to DS, other 2 to S.
All 5 times - "Severe media damage, unrecoverable". Coincidence?

this. though sufficient media damage would render it unrecoverable.
Drivesavers is a top tier DR company, along with Ontrack etc.
ontrack is crap

If external HDs are "always poor in quality" what would you suggest I use to store important files, pics, vids, songs, etc.? Isn't an internal HD prone to the same problems as an external HD?

Before this topic goes completely off-topic, why the hatred/sarcasm for OnTrack?

Ontrack do seem to be pretty good, have a good reputation, good tools and skills. But if you work in the DR industry and recieve jobs they have previously worked on you would soon see

An update on this thread that I started. Sent my drive to OnTrack... and ALL data was recovered. Thanks for the unnecessary fear, OnTrack-haters...

how much did it set you back?
January 21st, 2009, 12:16
$1,700.

Say it to people whining for a $50 recovery... 1'700$ is honest.
