Hi - Found this this site (and this topic) by searching for any clues to why my external hdd (WD3200bb) 'died' in the same way as described in this topic. I thought my only option was to pay £500-£900.

Just wanted to say thanks to this forum and the people who have contributed in this topic as I now have a glimmer of hope to save a life time of family photos!!! Next step - to follow all said here and test TVS's.....may also order pcb as backup!!!

Scrap that - Ive took the board off realising components on other side (Duh!!).........and found that a chip has been blown as shown.

Is there anything I can do????

Please tell me I can replace the board to get access again???

Check if the short is still there ! You might have another burned TVS, plug on the computer directly and check if the computer goes down with the drive puggled in, or check the PCB for short with the multimeter....

Thats not a very good way to check for shot circuit . He should have tested the 5/12 bolt pins for 0ohm?! plugging it in like that with a fault can still cause other things top fry.

You should start your own thread.

Thats an easy fix. If you got the right tools and experience. PCB swap is good start but only 1/3 of the way.

Check for quotes.

Looking at the picture again- closely - it might actually not be that easy.. you need to send for quote to pro to test where the fault is. Just doing random stuff will completely destroy this drive.

my money is on a Fried pre amp. You are looking at £500 - £900 if you want to see the data again.

.......guessing 'something' being removing the pcb???

I accept my stupidity if this was the case (though how would I have removed/replaced TVS's without removing the pcb.....and I did use anti static equip)

"something" was intended like removing the TVS , NOT checking the rest and using a common PC or PC power supply.

Ah ok.....apologies!!

I was unable to check with desktop PC as I connect ext drv to laptop.
But I did use a seperate external interface to test.

All testing seemed to match exactly to original posters situation which made me believe TVS's.

Then on removing pcb I saw damage to the chip.

Anyway it's a bad damage. There are chances that there is a internal damage AND you can fry a new PCB (that in any case , replaced straight away WON'T WORK). All depends on how valuable is your data and how much risk you want to take into account by tinkering with the drive.

Assuming there is no internal damage, you need to transfer the 8-pin serial EEPROM chip at U12 (between the Marvell MCU and motor controller) to your donor board. This chip stores unique drive specific calibration data. Hopefully it survived. If you are not experienced in soldering, then ask your local TV/AV repair shop. Otherwise, there are PCB vendors who will transfer the ROM, or its contents, for $10.

Im in two minds whether to try this or send off to DR pro.

Ive have no problem swapping pcb and soldering eeprom.....just worried about the chances of causing further damage!!

If you have a multimeter, you can easily determine if the preamp or any of the onboard supplies are shorted.

Can you give me details on how to do this please?

If preamp tests ok.......does this mean that theres a good chance a pcb swap (and EEPROM) will allow me access again?

Hi there. I have the a similar problem with exactly the same device. A Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320G ST3320820A. It contains pictures from a house renovation that are really important to me, that I am trying to recover. The problems also started because I use the wrong power supply for the drive (in an Iomega external caddy).

I have followed the instructions here, and checked the 3 TVSs with a multimeter, but it seems that none are shorted.

What was the end resolution for SeagateTrouble? Any idea what to try next??
