To be honest proper data recovery companies have probably got better things to do than look at your wifes axe wound.

I can help in UK, if you're interested, in complete confidence of course.

We do paedo/kidnap/murder/armed robbery work for the police, and so governed by strict confidentiality.

PM me if interested.

@Digital Don

Don't know if u have found a way around ur ROM problem. But hey, since it is a practice run y don't u ask Eric Lee 2 posts down after the 1st post. He might able to lead u in the right direction. There is no harm in tryn to get a higher grade even though u have 90% of ur data which is an A, so making an A+ is like putting icing on top of the cake to just make u feel u have accomplished what u set out to do.

Don't worry I have sent out the pom-poms for u.

The firmware fix didn't work, the board is dead, so rom swap here I come. Another thread says that the rom chip is the one that starts with 25x (pcimage and thatdellguy), makes sense since it is close to the drive read/write head connector.

I was looking at temperature controlled irons from Maplin UK, they are about £50, I was going to buy one but my friend has offered to do the chip swap for me, so fingers crossed.

Success!!!

To my surprise, the rom swap worked, all this has taught me a valuable lesson, "hard drives are not invincible, and things can go wrong". I feel very lucky, time to start backing up my data!!!

Good luck to you guys out there attempting the rom swap.

Something that maybe of interest!

An alternative data recovery method is to do a live board swap, sounds risky, but if you have damaged your rom chip, you have no other choice.

This is an excellent source of information.

yeah, and run into translator problems (at least, but with latest drives you probably won't access anything.) ... Is that also said in that video?
