Starting Data Recovery Business - need suggestion

I just want to say that i`m not here to make some quick money ,i`m already in the IT branch,for years now,and i`m still learning so i dont expect from some hdd guru here to reveal their secrets because probably i wouldnt do that either.
This discussion has gone in a completely different way like most of them go with similar question/topic on this forum I think everything related do DR is hard work, but i find it interesting to learn and study.
As i can see, only newbies here or someone who has started in this area recently can understand me and i can see lots of older members who are telling the story "Dont do that, you cant or its very hard and it will take years for you to learn DR" but that part of story encourages me even more because its little odd that most of hdd gurus wont say nothing related to the thread but they are always here to tell and preach about hard work and outsorcing etc. in their words better leave it to professionals, do not try to learn.Strange isn`t it?

There are some good points in this discussion. But what i realised is that this forum is made up of allot of professionals that offer to help innocent and un-knowing new comers. Its almost like a venus fly trap
BUT
there are some genuine nice people on here- when there's money to made.

Here is some advice. Data Recovery and Computers - nothing in common. It is a completely different way of working with hardware. IN computers you get hundreds of motherboards, plug in ram, cpu,hdd, gpu some watts and off it goes- no order
In HDD's - You have a million motherboards- and only 1 chance;sometimes only last 3-5 minutes.

I am only new in DR- 4 months in learning, like some people mentioned here- I made a nice website, flash animations, cool looking buttons some nice information , easy to use - i have been getting more calls by the day. But I dont know much about recvoery- last weekend I read a forums of some shmack that swapped plattes in the living room- gues what i did- took 7 spare hard drives and tried todo what he did.
Outcome- 7 Dead hardrives within minutes. Problems start after you remove the cover instantly. That was just an experiment- i try to outsource all physical damage because i need anothr £5-20k to get proper equipment to do this- and NOPE- nobody on this forum told me about which equipment - what about experience.

You said SalvationData costs the same as PC-3000?? who are you talking too? i haggled them ppls for 6 months i got my whole kit at *bleep* way cheaper than first offered - hahahah kit (all HD Doctors, DataCompass RAID, the the platter tools i will never use - anybody wanna buy? some cheepo tools, connectors, convertors and all that)

Im still new at DR so i actually still wanna type something -but to be honest i open some threads up and read the first 2 lines- i think to myself OMG! what the hell are you on about, next thread.

For what you are saying - i really would recommend SalvationData's Datacompass - You wont need to use recovermyfiles ever again- if the drive spins up and show in bios- 90% success rate (sometimes you need to tweak something, like seagates 7200.11 fw bug, or you get nas drives that create 16kb blocksizes)
-But then again i never used pc-3000-so i cant compare

There are cases where 'dead' drives can be fixed in a matter of minutes; but business is business my friend- and not even i want to document and freely distribute that info.

As your only going to tinker with peoples drives I would recommend that you get some kind of insurance if you make a mistake, you don't want your arse sued for a part time job

Yea that makes you think a bit. Can I sue Seagate, Maxtor, Fujitsu for any one of the hard drives on which I lost data on? No - because it says so on the box. They will change it it breaks. yaay.

Can anybody really sue a DR for trying to recovery data of a hard disk? a hard disk that was meant to store data in the first place? Where you sued before Guru? It sounds like something from experience.
That kinda freaked me out- just look up to big brother seagate and gonna add some terms and conditions to my website -

'I recover data but if for what ever reason your lost data gets .. lost- You cant sue me.'

Still got a long way to go before they make 2terabyte SSD's - they might run on 1/10 of the power and access speeds of 100tiems faster- but datacenters wont be keen on replacing million pounds to save a few hundred thousand.

SSD's existed in the 90's- just nobody wanted to market them. Thanks OCZ

I have had drives come to me where customer has requested a report on the drives condition after it has been to one of these crappy data recovery companies.

You get sued? And why not? If you do a substandard job (or even lose the drive !) on a customers drive then you should be held to account. In reality I am not sure if anyone has won a case against a data recovery company but there is always a first time.

( Example : You take your car to a mechanic for engine repairs. 1 week later the mechanic says "Sorry Mate your engine is well screwed now and there is no chance that you will get it working (£1000 please for new one) While all the time it was probably a fault that most pro mechanics with experience know about : How would you feel?)

If your really thinking of starting a data recovery company you should have started 10 years ago not now when there is massive saturation in the market.

Yes, it's not easy to start when there are a lot of other companies doing the same job in your place. But now many markets are occupied and finding a place in IT that is not much occupied and able to give good money is not also that easy.

At least you can try. In three-five months you will understand yourself if you can go further or it is better to change. Anyway it will be a good experience for you.

I get drives from the whole of UK It must be my competitive prices, nice looking webpage and the way i handle my cleints.
Im still learning by the way.. and after 4 months im already considering expanding my workshop

Any way - i work toehter with 2 of those people listed on what you wrote there. ;-]
