Does the Ext2 driver access Ext3 volumes, too?

It does not give errors on mounting though. If its pure ext3 then it should be fine. But if it has some tweaked values this method will fail and not provide any thorough error.

But its worth a try.. And it actually does work very well/

OK - this blue rings NAS drive runs a Linux OS. The hard drive is formatted in EXT3 Fielsystem that windows cannot pick up.

Now my best advice to you is. Find a local computer technician that KNOWS how to use Linux .. Ubuntu Live CD for example... OK not somebody who thinks they know computers.. Somebody who KNOWS LINUX!

Please do not attempt todo this your self!
It looks like it uses a normal linux partition and not some cosmic stuff to make live difficult - the white edition might.

You need to start this linux - mount the hard drive in there and copy the data off it! OK

Its that simple for somebody who knows linux..
---If it is not- and you run into problems while mounting the hard drive in LINUX - Jut write down the error and leave it alone. Then i suggest going to the WD forums! As those bofs will help you step by step..

I did try Linux. Two versions. RIP that comes loaded with Hirens, and Ubuntu Live. It just doesn't see it.

And before anyone else starts thinking that I am some crack Newb--
I am well versed in various versions of Linux, electronic repair and component level work. I put the board back in after feeling confident about the voltage going in and being processed.

About zFS Black-ST just joking . It is mostly used on Solaris stations, and often based on RaidZ arrays. And, by the way, the virtual machines (vmdk) there pulled out with out any trouble.

so the cap I was looking at was blown. After getting it replaced, I am now getting a whirrrr-CLICK, whirrrr-CLICK noise, but it will go away after a min or so, but I'm still not getting lights on the ethernet or the front leds.... I am still hanging onto the bad cap=bad board theory I've come up with. Just cause you find one bad apple, there's generally going to be another.

Where can I get the version of Linux that will solve this???

Hold on guys. This seems to be well off track. The drive had failed with pcb issues and potentially voltage issues. After some work it spins but spins and clicks and eventually spins down, probably then going into kernel mode. This is now in the realm of professional recovery as no software tool will get beyond a SA load problem.

I would suspect (diagnosis from afar) that a donor pcb and firmware swap will be required, but there may also be head or platter issues. As the NAS was crashing for a while before hand I would also expect bad sectors possibly finally in the SA that are now causing the current problem.

You have been offered professional help above by somebody close, possibly even for free. I would take that, even if only to get a professional diagnosis and know if you have any hope of 1/ getting the data back and 2/ getting it back yourself without professional help.

I often do the assessement for clients who want to try it for themselves (I am too far away
to help you). Most times the job comes back eventually, especially when people weigh up the value of the data (I do charity work at huge discounts as often there simply is no money to do normal IT processes such as backups).

Yea this recovery went pear shaped after he plugged it back into the "repaired" nas and caused a pcb issue and who knows what else.
Only speculation is left now. So the best option is for somebody with excellent experience to help now.
