I would like to clarify on the post above, the "Percussive Maintenance" Technique above was used only after we had done a data audit and ascertained that much of the most critical data could be gleaned from other backups reducing the stakes, in the case of critical data this sort of manoeuvre can very easily render your data irretrievable or at the least seriously increase the effort/cost a data company will charge to recover your data. Same goes for the idea of the clean air rig, If you have no critical data to loose on your drive you can afford to play around a little, if not please don't!

I think it's a very bad advice to even link to a sutch solution when the owner is desperate about her information!
If the info was "wasteable" then you can do whatever you want, but thats not the case here.

The data may be "irreplaceable", but this does not mean that the OP is willing to pay any price for its recovery. In fact he stated that "at this point I'm willing to try anything".

You have given him two options -- send it to you, or bin it. I have made him aware of a plausible third option. Not only that, but I have given him a balanced view by providing success stories as well as photos of potential pitfalls. I understand that you could not possibly suggest what I'm suggesting, although you must know that percussive maintenance has an excellent chance of success. No doubt you would be the butt of ridicule amongst your colleagues, and rightfuly so. But I am ridiculed no matter what I say, so it makes no difference to me.

Dump it several times on a carpet floor. With lock, the drive head mechanism will unlock and move again. I fixed mine this way. After all, if you will be loosing your information any way, what the hech. (this is, if you will not pay $$$ at a data recovery place)

Dont listen to the morons here that get horrified because somebody recommending hitting the drive. It works. I have done it with other drives as well, and with many electronic equipment, and I am a BSEE and have 25 years servicing computers. Go ahead and drop the drive, (2-3 feet high onto a carpet loor, not too hard, of course).
