I've already PM'd the OP with an offer by CSSI to do this for free...they believe that they can do this and want to prove it. So, outside the cost to ship the drive, there is no cost to the OP...as far as I can tell.

I'm a little unsure about it...
I mean, its a good situation in terms of risking my data... not that important... buut
I really wanted to try to do it myself... I've already learned so much about drives in the last few months... and its been hella fun / interesting... however maybe it would be better for me to get some practice up on easier drives to recover first before jumping in the deepend so to speak...

I didn't do the course (even crazier waste of money) but it did buy the book and studied just about every youtube vid. bigest waste of money imho... I really should have done the head change first but i was feeling lazy at the time... really kicking myself now lol.
how can you say its a waste of money, when the book is actually a course book that belong to the sans course. you follow along with the book & watch the Class Videos, (those are not the same as the Convention presentation Videos).
how can you learn anything if, everything does not have a value to you... man now i know why people don't teach. its kinda like you want somebody to give you a proven answer to your scenario. guess what not everybody has had that scenario..... i only offer what sounds logical to me, hell try it & hope for the best, or leave it to the those guys that will try it for free.

well, the reason why in my opinion it was a waste is because the book is actually a really old revision and he refuses to update it... and the reason he said is because he was making so much money.
secondly, all the info that was in there can all be found publicly and it didn't disclose any information on working with hardware... he padded it out big time with screenshots of software I can't even read due to really poor compression and they do not include any kind of descriptions or supporting text.
and on top of all of that, he repeats information 2 or 3 times too.
seriously i learned more from his youtube vids and they are free.

If youtube videos and the internet say the truth and "that's the way", why come here asking ? Should have already got data, no ?!?
February 23rd, 2011, 7:03
there are alot of holes in the info and its not so easy to come by as its rather a specialised/niche area
i came here to fill those gaps... I wouldn't want to boch up a job on crappy info... I need to verify everything before i do it... I wanted something more comprhensive than those little youtube vids... I was dissapointed.
After all, you guys know your drives

If not than whats the purpose of a forum?

Whats the purpose of this forum?
Ahh, I've been waiting for you to ask this question. I can tell you what this forum (and *any* forum for that matter) is NOT and it is not here to teach something that is beyond the scope of what a quid pro quo forum will be able to provide. Heart surgery cannot be reproduced in a forum. Logical data recovery, simple firmware issues (BSY, etc.), even some low level board repair - all these are what this forum is for. Referring people to others who can fix their HD problems - that is what this forum is for. Explaining a procedure to someone on how to "fix" the type of problem you are having is not what this forum is for. It is not what any forum is for. Because it can't be taught in a forum. You are assuming this is a relatively simple fix that if *oooonly* you had the secret that others are withholding, then you'd be on your way. I believe others here have told you in so many words that this isn't the case.

February 23rd, 2011, 18:16

should i bother?

One thing I'm curious about which no one seems to have addressed (or maybe I missed it)
Was the drive opened in a dust free environment, or just at the kitchen table?
