There is no quick way to fulfil purpose of life. Never. All your life events add to it.
Purpose of life is why we live, not that we live to fulfil ourselves. So in other words it not a goal. A goal is to find it.... I think it will explain why you offended me.

Thank you for clarifying. It seems our slight disagreement boils down to miscommunication.
My use of the word "you" was ment as a generic "you". As in "one", "someone", "someone else" etc.

Since its already close to beyond repair, you might as well carefully take off the cover yourself and have a quick look.
If no obvious platter damage or missing bit or loose bit then consider if worth sending off
(however you won't be albe to see the state of the underneath of the platter or the lower head)

If you see damage then you know its going to expensive or impossible and can decide if worth pursuing

Oh, no. If you consider sending for repair, don't open. Before sending double check if the swapped PCB is compatible.

Well, after delaying for as long as possible, I was finally asked to give it a go

I built a small 'clean enclosure' so I could open it long enough to take a photo. Waste of time! There was already prints and dirt on it. At this point, I started the purely academic exercise of figuring out what what wrong:

1) The previous repair shop got fingerprints and dust on the drive

2) Then, the previous repair shop considered it worthwhile to STEAL ALL OF THE SCREWS. That's right, they took all of the internal screws, and replaced only 7/8 external ones. This is why the drive spun up but made no other noises. I have a photo of this if anyone wants it (as a warning)

3) The original problems seems to be a bad read head, it was damaged, but really who knows.

So, I had all my tools out. Why not try a head replacement? It went well, of course no data was recovered, but it was interesting. Now I've done my duty, and can forget about all of this.
