Hmm I doubt it.

All I dıd was format the drive in NTFS made sure no compression was enabled then just dragged and dropped the data really.

Any clues on a free alternative to DMDE?

DMDE "Free Edition supports recovery of up to 4000 files from the current panel only".

Otherwise, try Recuva, PhotoRec.
