The sad fact of our industry is that there isn't much of a relationship between price and quality of service rendered, and the customer has no way of comparing capabilities vs. prices.

Good point, the same for :

Electronics failure

- unique ROM chip

175,00 +parts
225,00 +parts

Depending on the OS ....

Replacing/re-programming the ROM chip or the adaptive module wouldn't interfere at all with the FS.

What if the drive is encrypted by the user with truecrypt full drive encryption and the user states that he have windows installed and he have in fact Linux ?
:D :D :D

When doing a logic file recovery or even file carving or fixing the file system, it would make sense ..... But .... charging more or less because of the file system on the drive when replacing a PCB or a ROM or even fixing a SA module doesn't sound very reasonable ...

Alex, I don't think in the same way as you do.
Don't take me wrong but professionals are free to charge whatever they want for they work, as the price charged sometimes will reflect what a professional thinks his/her own work is worth, and this is particulary valid for professionals working for them, being their own bosses. This is not a bad thing at all, and remember that unlike us those professionals have to invest a lot of money in tools, not to mention the expenses associated with running a business and still manage to have some profit. This is the same as the guy at the computer shop that charges $180 usd to install you a legal windows os versus the kid next door that will install you a pirated windows for $25 .
Also if we were to put aside the quality of the work there are also the lack of competent professionals with the correct tools and knowledge willing to do the jobs for a lower price.
Not to mention the parts/donor price as well.
Sometimes several jobs will pay a little bit well then others and pros might need to profit a little bit more with the simpler tasks to compensate for the loss of profit in other tasks.
We are in no position to judge, people are free to charge whatever they like as clients will have the free will to chose the service they will end up using as well.
While i would love to believe that all of pros charging higher prices are competent, that is not true as well, so i do believe that independently of what one charge the most important aspect on a business is to build up a good reputation and never disapoint the clients.
It's up to us now to charge what we feel it's a reasonable price or fee for our job without reducing in any way the quality of our service.
As information is more and more available there will be more and more professionals on the field as well, but only the ones that can demonstrate competence to their clients will stay on business, no matter what they charge.
