I just ran DMDE against a 250GB drive in a Win98SE system. DMDE reports a size of 128GiB. It appears that DMDE gets its capacity information from the OS, not directly from the drive. Therefore any capacity issue should be resolved by retrieving the drive's Identify Device data. In other words, the OS, and consequently DMDE, can't be trusted to report the drive's correct capacity.

Everything went well when I tried again in batches. This time it recovered just about every picture (and I can open most it looks like from a sample bunch) and most files as well. Thanks again!

After you have finished, you might try to restore the boot sector from the copy. Perhaps that was all that was required all along. If so, then it would be a very strange fault.

Just out curiosity, after you have finished, you might want to look at sector 2086 in hex mode. This will be the actual first sector of the FAT. I suspect that it will look very much like your corrupted sector 2048, if not identical.

Thanks. I'll have to look into how to restore it and I might give it a shot

R-click the partition and select "Restore Boot Sector from the Copy".

Download a trial of R-Studio from rtt.com and scan the drive. It's a bit more expensive software, but well worth it if your data is important.
