WD3200BMVV SATA conversion screw up

Have a hot air rework station and microscope so moving the chip physically is not an issue. What I need to know is if there's anything else needed after that?

To get other board working you need send me your board. I will read your drive rom and put it in my board and send it to you. Or I will just send you my board and you need physically move biggest square chip from your board to my board.

How much data do you have on this drive? If it's not a lot, I could ask you to send me sector ranges, I will decrypt them and send you back.

You can read the ROM (U12) of the original PCB using an MHDD or HDDSuperTool script. This would obviate the necessity to ship the original PCB. I could help the OP with this, if necessary.

Ok moving the chip myself should not be a problem.
Don't know the amount of data on the drive, the owner said it was "not much" but I never trust the end user to know/tell the truth.
Still would like to know the full cost + shipping (even if estimated) so I can inform the owner what he is in for.

Whichever way is easier for you drHDD, I can send the board, or send the sector ranges as long as you can explain how I can get what you need to make it work.

So far have not got SeDiv to run.
Tried in miniXP and it crashes right way.
Installed win7 on a spare HD and got an error that SeDiv crashed but stays running in the task mgr.

Any other requirements for this besides the vague screenshots included?

Drive is encrypted (Inic-1607E). There are few ways how to solve it. Chose what you prefare.
1) Make image to the new drive and decrypt after (by control PCB from old WD MyBook).
2) Find new PCB (USB) with the same fw or transfer there the original fw (by reading/copying fw or transfer MPU by soldering).
3) Send to DR guy/company drive or encrypted image.

May be I miss something but hope it's clear about general idea.

Thanks that seems reasonable, definitely would want tracking. Where are they shipping from?

I'm still unclear if simply transferring the 1 chip is all that is needed.
This is purely for my own knowledge.

I assume the process is:

1. Remove the PCB from the HD.
2. Desolider the chip from the defective PCB.
3. Desolider the same chip from the new PCB.
4. Attach/solider the chip from the defective PCB to the new PCB.
5. Attach the new PCB to the HD.
6. Connect HD via USB to a PC and simply copy the data to another drive.

Lastly, how sensitive are these chips to heat or rather how much heat would damage these chips?
Normally I don't worry about this doing rework with my hot air station because most jelly bean components are cheap to replace.
But since this has firmware, I'm assuming I'd want to be more care full.

In your case, ROM with drive fw is in the MPU (external 8-pin serial flash chip contains code for USB bridge Inic-1607E). So if you could not to read ROM via SATA interface (probably, playing with x-modem is complicated a little bit) you have to transfer MPU on a new compatible PCB (if you are very lucky, a new PCB could have compatible fw/head map that can prevent transfer MPU). Otherwise, you can make image (it will stay encrypted) via SATA interface and decrypt it after.

It's this "lucky" part of the process that throws me.
Guess I'm just used to working with known processes in which if you do "A" and then do "B" then you get "C" no maybes or hope involved.

Also your last statement to make an image and decrypt later....decrypt later with what? Thought the purpose of getting the PCB is to allow decryption. I can already access the drive via SATA so not sure what you mean

Forgot to mention. I was bored last night and fired up ddrescue. Created an image file of the HD.

Don't know if it will help, but at least I have it.

Maybe I can compress the image enough where someone can download it from me and decrypt it.

Try using HDDSuperTool to dump the ROM:

I have attached an untested script which will attempt to extract a 256KB ROM image from your PCB.

To extract a 512KB image, change the following line from ...

seti $chunks = 4

... to ...

seti $chunks = 8

The script is safe -- it does not write to your drive's firmware.

I have also used a slightly different method (which the author suggests is more reliable). It reads the ROM, "sector by sector".
