Not sure what they're all for, but the 3rd digit is the one too watch out for when doing head swaps.

I opened several old Maxtor drives, all the ones with one type of 3rd digit had the same type of Preamp chip.

yes sir i upgraded to win xp and there is no sound in computer now ever since upgrade ineedto know what to do in this case under other devices theres a3 ? with a ! on in and it tells me that the drivers are gone or un installed sound driver i need desperate hel pease thank hope to hear from you soon thanks

Maxtors - anyone know what the letters in the four letter code reference?
for ex:

K, M, B, D

or

N, M, B, A and so on..

Ok, thats some good stuff.
But what matches up with what is printed on the lable?

I looked at 2 drives with the code K, G, B, A and nothing in #83 had a "K"

??

First letter "K" is the Preamp type second letter "M" is the head type .

I opened up several 5409U4 drives looking for a donor, and ones with same 1st two digits had completely different preamp chips.

my maxtor hard disc crash....
the situation is like this

i had a virus infection on my window at first. and i need to reformat it. but i wanted the data back. so i connect my hard disc to my friends pc to recover those data. but. once i plug into my freinds pc. the hard disc electric board burn off i think. weird smell coming out.

now... i cant even detect my hard drive. help plz. i need consultant. and i need the data back urgently. i am a student and i coudnt afford to those company that recover data back for such a large amount of money. plz.

THis letters wich said´s need for matching MHA to match letters its not always true

I had a Maxtor 2F04L0xxxx patient and search for donnor , bought the hdd donnor, same model, same CODE, SAME LETTERS and when arrive and check lift up the sitcker, the preamplifier was different

Hi i work for a data recovery company, does any1 have any questions?

Do you know anything about Fujitsu laptop drives?

Specifically, I have a few that will not move out of park onto the platters. There is no mechanical impairment and the PCB is not the cause.

Any ideas?

Hi,

As far as I remember I have seen this with 2 different causes:
1. the line that goes to the VCM in the flexible PCB was burnt ->check the resistance from outside.
2. this is not that sure, just a faint memory that a preamp failure caused such thing.
