This is a great thread - very helpful - but I have one problem: the link to the picture used to identify the 12V TVS diode is broken:

The usual culprit (12V TVS diode) is identified in this photo:

Note that I have added colored circles to help with identification.

The component in the red circle is labeled L14
The component in the yellow circle is labeled LS3
The component in the green circle is labeled SUA GP834

Can anyone tell me which one is the 12V TVS diode?

My situation: I put this drive in an external docking station with the wrong power supply connected, blowing out the drive. I'd like to access the data one time to back it up, as it would save me some time re-downloading. So I apparently need to remove the 12V TVS diode, though some more specific instructions on how to do that would be much appreciated.

Can I really just cut down through the middle of the diode with nail clippers? That wont harm the circuit board underneath? Is there any need to try to loosen the solder before I try to cut it?

Not 100% sure, but i believe this is the case. So i want to give it a try by getting a replacement. The only thing i need to know if components must be replaced.

I'm sorry to insist on mr_spokk's question, but if drive spins up and clicks, then 99% it is NOT the pcb.

Agree that it is much more likely to be heads than PCB, but I would put the chances at 90% rather than the usual 99%+ as I have seen several cases of this PARTICULAR model clicking with a duff PCB.

hi all! A friend plugged in the incorrect power source (now that I have readed this thread, I see that this is a classical situation). So I put the disk in a working enclosure, and no leds when power on, then I cut the 12V TVS, now the leds light up, disk runs without any rare noises! But... looks like the BIOS is not detecting the disk. What can I do? cutting the 5V TVS will help? Any help will be appreciated. Very, very instructive forum! Thanks a lot!

if your drive is spinning , then your 5v TVS is ok.
Try connecting it directly to a PC, not usb enclosure, and check.
Check if you have not damaged the board while Cutting 12v TVS.
Listen ,if there are any faint clicking noise , from the drive.

Hi all,

I'm trying to help out some family members. They have this model HDD which shows no signs of life. I have followed the thread and have tested the TVS diodes for short circuit, but all seem ok. There is no visible burn marks on the PCB and everything looks normal. I think something besides the TVS diode is pulling down the 5VDC line. With the TVS both in and out of circuit my Ohm measurement is the same.

I get conduction in both directions using the diode check on my meter, but get 1.2VDC drop over the diode with the positive lead on the cathode (black stripe) and negative lead on the anode. The diode has been replaced with the same effect (new diode). In the same orientation on the diodes on next to the TVS, I only get conduction in one direction, anode (positive lead) to cathode (negative lead on black stripes of the diodes).

I removed the capacitor next to the TVS 5VDC diode but the capacitor is not short circuit (or even low). Is there anywhere else I should check?

TVS are for protection and the drive will work without them.
Remove the 5V tvs and check if there is voltage drop.
Disconnect the PCB from the Hard disk , and check if there is any drop in voltage.
You can also check ,carefully, if some other components are getting hot.

You’re not connecting the diodes in the right configuration if there’s a voltage drop of 1.2V. Please check the configuration and placement of diodes in the circuit again and then check the voltage drops.

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me out with a similar hard drive. I'm trying to fix a hard drive for my brother-in-law. It was his back-up drive for his wife's pictures of their kids. Both their laptop drive and back-up drive died within two weeks of one another, so they would really appreciate it if we could get this working. Basically, the hard drive does nothing at all when hooked up to an external source (an external docking station and hooked up to my desktop). It doesn't power on or register or anything, so I figured I could try a new PCB and see if that does anything.

I was wondering if you could look at the information above and tell me if the PCB I linked to would work with this hard drive. Not all of the serial information matches up exactly, but this is the closest I could find. If you think it will work, I'll give it a shot.

Hey everyone, I was hoping you could help me with a problem. I'm trying to help my brother-in-law with his external backup hard drive. He used it to store all his wife's pics of their kids; the backup drive died within a month of their laptop drive, and they hadn't used the backup to restore the pics.

The external drive does not power up at all. I hooked it up to a new external enclosure, a hard drive dock, and my desktop, and the drive doesn't do anything. I thought trying to replace the PCB might be a good course of action.
