Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hey again,
I hate to re-open this topic but i got more problems with the same hard disk.
Thanks again to michael for repairing it last time, but now i have another issue.
It worked fine until now, pvr reported unknown file type and now i cannot open the program list anymore.
So opened the pvr once more, took out the hard drive and looking at it everything seems fine.
So i hooked it to the pc and this time it seems to identify correctly to the computer. I cannot ofcourse see the files in windows since the file system is unknown.
I can see high crc errors in Disinternals Linux reader, but the contents wont show, i suspect since its not really a Linux file system either..
Anyways, i had time to backup everything important from the hard drive before the new problems arrived. I'm just curious if it could be read using maybe fusion or syphon to extract files and then i could re-format it using the pvr.
I was able to backup the disk using R-studio to my pc.
I tried what fzabkar suggested in the previous posts and edited the partition id's with a hex editor.
Fusion still doesn't recognice the boot sector, though it shows the data in the general section according to each partition id. And it doesnt recognice the files at all...
So fzabkar, or anyone else any suggestions of how i could open the file system?
I'm propably ditching the pvr anyways after this since it makes the hard disk not work properly, just thought if i could extract the programs once more..

Hi, i'm sorry that you are having still problems with this PVR.
Can you show us SMART status with HD Tune or HD Sentinel or CristalDisk ?

If the file system cannot be mounted, then I would use a hex editor (eg HxD freeware) to view the beginning and end of a previously recovered file. The header information may help to identify the file type. One could then scan the drive with a raw data recovery tool (eg PhotoRec freeware) in search of these signatures.

How do i do this?
I have tried to recover using Photorec, but it only is able to extract the .mp3 and screenshots .bmp but not the actual video files..
I remember the video files extracted from the hdd using usb were in format of .ts or something like that? How do i make photorec "understand" this format?

"TS" sounds like "MPEG Transport Stream", in which case you will probably find that VLC (Videolan) will play these files.
Could we see the first sector of one of these .ts files?
In HxD you would drag your cursor over the first few lines and then select Edit -> Copy As -> Editor View. Then paste the clipboard contents into your next post (Ctrl-V or Edit -> Paste). Use the Code button in the forum's toolbar to preserve the formatting.

Very probably this time it's a logical issue, not physical damage.
I suggest you to follow fzabkar's advices.

Yeah, thanks michael thats what i suspected myself..
I found some files i have transferred before using usb, i opened one and it seems to start with plenty of zeros..
I copied so much it includes the few lines that actually seem to have some data.
I dont want to paste it here so i don't flood the topic, so i uploaded it to mega:
https://mega.co.nz/#!9c40ALJb!NnAbyGRjmI4Bnm4tHBZbBgmsTKAa3hgLNIxBttt1614The files don't actually have an extension at all, so i'm not really sure if they are .ts .

I think the files are some sort of mpeg though, since projectx can handle them..

Did anybody get a chance to look at the file? Fzabkar?

Perhaps MediaInfo could tell you something about the file?

As a returning customer you certainly qualify for a discount :)
It resembles MPEG somehow, but this isn't exactly MPEG according to magic.
