if the data is not needed why would you bother, throw from the empire state building or whatever, but I really can't understand the urge to destroy the drive using random commands

Let's just say, that this was the Apollo 40 Lunar Mission and I was stuck on the moon because of this drive and my only hope of safe return was mission control entering some commands from earth and/or attempting a firmware update. What would you do?

Whatever commands being sent will not work because the drive is not in a state where it can pick them up.
It's like talking to another person. You could talk all you want to, but if the other person is sleeping is on drugs, then your message will not be received and processed. Because the other person is impaired.

I wouldn't be on the moon if I wasn't familiar with the right commands, so if i am stuck on the moon i know exactly what commands to use, and what commands will destroy my only way out

With limited info in the thread, it seems his drive was not clicking. Additionally, it seems like his drive is not as degraded and at times it received commands.

Ok, I guess I will just shelf this one. Maybe move onto my pile of way older busted drives to experiment with, maybe even open one of them up and just get a feel for the different parts and inner workings of them. (yes, I know they are ruined once I do this outside of clean room). Wish this current drive had been more reasonable but I guess it's broken. Thanks for your help though. I learned a lot.

Yea, I definitely won’t be buying seagate again. Or Lacie for that matter. Luckily I have some pretty decent backups so I'm not hurt too bad but it’s annoying because this drive is less than 5 years old and sat in a ceiling in luxury not being worked too hard. Whatever. It is what it is.

i have a seagate here that came in, just a few month on the road...
