sticktion or seized bearing. Howewer hitachies are not prone to seize.

I thing we're agreed gentlemen, stiction is almost certainly the culprit.
Like Pepe says, Hitachi laptop drives are not generally prone to seizure. Only seen it once, and that one had been dropped in the ocean and the salt water had seized the bearings!
We can almost certainly sort that one out at a reasonable charge, unless it's been opened up and/or "McGuyvered" (as BlackST would say) !!
