Always happy to help someone get rid of unwanted green. If you happen to have any more, especially the kind with dead presidents on it, let me know :)

Why not try HDAT and do a read/write/read several times to see if the problem clears up. I'm not suggesting keeping the drive, by any means, but in the interest of science...

@rchadwick:
unfortunately, that kind of greens are not in excess here. I spent all of them in hard drives :)

@cgallery:
Link for HDAT?

You won't get rid of those "greens" with free software or homegrown solutions, I can solve the problem definitely but it requires HW complex and a few days... you are only wasting time, but the time is yours and you pay for the electricity... so...

end of MHDD scan: 115 greens. a little less than the HDDScan on Windows.

Now I am doing what is said here:

hdd-faq-t5.html

Q: How can I fix delays on my HDD (red and brown blocks in MHDD)?
A: Use ERASE command in MHDD (it will erase the entire hard drive though ), then run scan+erase delays ON, then scan+remap ON.

I got rid of 80% of them, no?
Yes, I pay for the electricity. You are invited.

I have executed the ERASE function in MHDD. No problems.
I am scanning (normal scan) and there is a small improvement (25% less greens).

Don't worry, they'll come back very soon. P.s. Do you think the world is really interested in your drive improvement? Nothing more interesting to do?

Hello,

First i want to say im glad i found your thread and i hope ur still motivated to test things out even thought some posts in here were a bit negative

i think hdat the tool metioned by cgallery should be this one (correct me if im wrong):
http://www.hdat2.com/

I own two of the same drives as yours one with Revision(firmware) 1AA01104 (half a year old) and the other one with 1AA01109 (2months old)

the 04 already had a hard time on lan partys switching between cases to move data from pc to pc
the 09 was placed on the bottom of my case while using it (1 month)

now both of them are mounted as they should be and air cooled to 24-25°C while operating
they are both used as data backup drives, no operating system is installed/used on them

what do u say to my first hddscan (of 09)? should i be worried? have you already tested your bad drive in every day use?
i hope the scan didnt harm the data on the drive ... (the drive is half full)

till 70% the drive had around 7000 over 5ms
from 70% to the end it climed up to 40000 sectors over 5ms .. hmmm
(with such numbers its hard for me to imagine that there are other drives with all sectors under 5ms; again correct me if im wrong)
around 98% i looked at the KB/s it was around 115000 KB/s (what did you have?)

did you tell the firmware of your drives already? sorry if i cant remember them...

bye b2k

oh btw hddscan shows the wrong date ;)

same drive (09) with hdtach

it looks like it stays very long at max speed ... maybe this are the 70% from above

maybe its just the fact that the drive got 3 patterns but normally single drives have a more logarithmic curve

Re: Samsung F1 (1TB) HDDScan: >700 green blocks. do I return it?

August 30th, 2008, 23:42

Hi b2k:
I am glad that someone else is posting real scans.
My Samsungs are both Firmware 1AA01112, manuf-Jun2008
although purchased 1 months appart (Jul,Aug), and in different shops.

Your disk only has 10 green blocks. Its pretty good. My "good one" has around 13.
Yours has one orange block, but this is usually due to Windows being busy, not the disk. Look at the log (if you saved it), and locate the position of the orange block. Then rescan from a bit earlier position, and look if the orange block appears again. Probably not.
Oh, I see the orange block is at the beginning. So just start the scan from the beginning and see
if it appears again.

Your transfer rate curve in HDDScan shows a very high speed. Maybe it is wrong.
Look at mines (for the bad disk, but the good one is very close):

I haven't tried HDTach.

hi hddgorilla,
ah yours are working with a more recent firmware, good to know
would be interesting if the version does say somthing about the drive behavior here

thx for pointing out the too high transfer speed, of course much too high for a single drive .. no idea how i managed to get this result; hdtach shows normal speeds
oh and your drives curves are much more consistant than mine but thats maybe just because of the wrong speed measurments (just gussing)

i rescanned the beginning of 09 and you were right, now the orange is gone!
but i still got the to high speeds (between 120 and 200) hmm ...

lets check if we both are using the same version of hddscan (mine is the latest 3.1 and i deactivated the skin)
second i saw that you were using VR-Verify as scan mode while i was using RD-Read
(oh and yours if i remember right is without data while mine already has data on it)

Re: Samsung F1 (1TB) HDDScan: >700 green blocks. do I return it?

August 31st, 2008, 13:48

Hello b2k:

I don't know the difference between firmwares. For now, I prefer not to know. I don't want to complicate things even more. :P

About the transfer speed, my controller is in compatible mode. This is a SATA emulated as IDE. Maybe yours is using pure SATA (AHCI), and that is why speed is higher and the curve's shape is different?

I predicted that the orange would go, because it also happens to me from time to time. False oranges are very usual.

My HDDScan is also version 3.1 (I previously thought that it was v3.0, but no, it is 3.1 indeed, I downloaded it just a few days ago). Haha, I also deactivated the skin. I hate skins!!
Yes, I always use Verify mode Scan in HDDScan. Not Read mode. Long ago I took
this decission, I don't remember why.
And yes, my disk is empty now. Now I am going to fill it with data to see if there is any problem. But in my experience, HDDScan result is independent on the data contained. Even more, the result is the same regardless if your drive is formatted or not, with or without data.

regards

hi,
just thought with later firmware they maybe improved the speed in some cases so yours should be faster in some situations (or it went in the other direction who knows)

yes i have got a SATA 150 controller (no SATA II) nvidia nforce4 (DFI board) or something
dont think its a very good contrller because with RAID stripe i cant feel a big performance plus on my windows harddisks array (but i only use 2 HDs for it anyway)
so u think the speeds could be right on the 09? i really need to scan the 04 too ...

why do you port SATA to IDE?

ill also make a hdtune scan to have one more judge later

back to bad sectors: could it be that the HD software checks bad sectors (slow and/or broken) when it encounters them (writing something to disk) and put it on this G-list (dont know if that is the name) so it cant be accessed anymore .. would like to know where the limits are ... and if so do you know which SMART parameter will be increased ("Reallocation Sector Count" or "Uncorrectable Sector Count")?

and the erase option, will it measure the speeds while erasing :)

my burst rate is much higher than yours. Probably its the controller.

I am using SATA as IDE, so I don't need to install SATA drivers.
You are probably also as IDE.

I don't know when a bad sector is reallocated. I think a slow sector is not reallocated. Only the bad ones.
I know that, whenever a sector is reallocated, (mapped out), the SMART changes both "Reallocation Sector Count" and "Uncorrectable Sector Count" increasing them by 1 (the RAW value)
