Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hello
I made a mistake. I though the command "dump" ran correctly, but it didn't. I think the above screenshot is for a WD 250GB and my drive is a WD 160GB. But now here is my problem.
When booting MHDD, it asks to select HDD, which I do, then I type ".dump or .dump2". Both of them run a few lines of code but then it just stops with error "Error: Drive Reports Error". This means that I can't save the bin file to view the contents. Is it possible that the commands are trying to save the bin files onto the locked drive and not USB bootable MHDD drive?
Another question: Do I need to run the attached SATA WD 160GB drive in Native Sata or AHCI SATA. The reason I ask is that I am using another computer to do this and this computer's BIOS doesn't have any AHCI Mode settings in its BIOS.
Thank you.

I would run the WD diagnostics on the drive sounds like the drive is having problems other than the password issue. What is the history on the drive make model what happened etc

Hi. We bought the laptop second hand from a shop and when we switched it on, we got the password prompt. So I thought in was the Power on Password feature and reset the motherboard password features. Still didn't work, so I removed the drive inserted a clean drive and installed windows etc. I would just like to see if I could restore the locked drive, don't care about the old data (it's not our data anyways). But yeah, so far so NOT so good....lol. I even tried it in another computer this afternoon but now I get No DRQ error (figures!).

No.
I can think of a couple of different possible reasons for the behaviour that you're seeing, but since you've explained that the data on the drive isn't yours, and since the drive was effectively unusable when you bought it (as part of the laptop), I suggest that the shop should be replacing that drive.

@Vulcan
Yes normally we would send it back or ask for a replacement, but we got a sweet deal on the laptop itself. We already installed another drive and loaded windows etc. So this is actually just me trying to make the drive useable. I normally use old drives (or drives smaller than 500GB) as external drives for customer backups or cloning purposes.

I'm not sure why you are getting errors, I never did figure those out, luckily I got one of the dump scripts to run without an error.
As far as the Sata settings, I've read Native is much better than AHCI.

I need some assistance in decoding the password for the attached bin file. Tried using zu betta without luck, tried using HDAT2 with the 30 hex without luck.

you should try 32 bytes: add BF37 to the end
November 8th, 2012, 15:49
Tried 95....bf37 as user and master.
Tried 8a....fc56 as user and master.
Both entries using HDAT2 v4.8.1 and not good.
Other pointers?

What bin file is that 22 or 42? Either way, I don't see the appropriate header before what would be the user password?
November 8th, 2012, 18:42
Header is at 34 35 36 offset.
This is an extended 22 bin due to newer drives.
November 8th, 2012, 23:13
I'm only familiar with user passwords after 00 01 07 headers, sorry. If the next 32 bytes after the header you describe do not work as the user password in hdat2 4.7 or higher, I have no idea.

My computer was acting glitchy, so I reinstalled windows on my main computer. Had the mybook drive secured with password I knew. Thought I unlocked it in preparation for the windows reinstall, but only managed to change password - and was an idiot, didn't write it down. I realized the problem when I tried to reconnect and get to my files after the reinstall. No dice. Brilliant, right?
So now all my legal, medical docs, resumes music, pics, and writings are safely beyond my reach. I've read some stuff on here and see there are some answers, but it's beyond. I read about dumping the bin (ok, stop laughing, it's something like that) and decoding the password from that, but beyond that, I’m lost. Can anyone help me by telling me in dumbspeak what to download to get the images I have seen here re dump, and help decipher this damn password so I can have my life back? And no, I will not take offense if you write as though I were a child and talk down to me. Normally, I’m not quite so stupid as I was in this case, but.... Thanks in advance. I'm never locking anything again; steal my data for all I care!

The above question is a duplicate of the new thread here:
mybook-essential-2tb-locked-and-recall-password-t24474.htmlSince that is a completely different situation from
this thread, I suggest any replies should use the link above and not
this thread.

Dear Gurus,
is there any hope for my WD10EZRX? I was so stupid I have inserted it into my satellite pvr receiver and now have:
MHDD>eid
WDC WD10EZRX-00A8LB0 LBA:1,953,525,168 BIOS
SN:WD-WMC1U3344866 FW:01.01A01
Supports: LBA48 HPA DLMC LBA MS16 DMA (UDMA6,MWDMA2)
SMART: Enabled SelfTest: Supported ErrorLog: Supported
Security: MAX, ON. Size = 953869MB
WARNING: THIS DRIVE IS LOCKED BY ATA PASSWORD
No important data on the drive (only some tv recordings, I could erase with no sorrow). I just want my hdd back to use it with my PC.
I have read all this thread and have tried following:
mhdd dump/dump2/dump48 - No Drq
zu /s /p - Drive not ready
zu betta /s /p /a - counter for many hours, after Ctr-C - unlock not done
mavr_r 00/01/10/11 - Error!!! Drive Busy Time Out Expired!!!
I'm not very likely to pay extra 50$ nor to throw down unusable drive into bottom drawer for destiny either.
Any suggestions or idea? Please...

Hello everyone
I am just here to tell everyone how I unlocked my WD 160GB HDD (WD WD1600BEKT). As many of you know, to do this you can use MHDD and run the commands to produce a binary file which in turn you can open in a hex editor and try to figure out what the password(s) are. Well this did not work for me...at all, because I could not even produce the binary file because all I got was either DRQ Error or Drive Error messages. I then tried zu, which also produced nothing...I was really sad

I left this alone (no choice, had to work on other stuff) for about two weeks and yesterday I finally started again, reading this forum from start to finish, trying all things listed and done by others....haha...still no joy. Then today I read samantha's entry and it caught my eye: try other sata ports. In my case the hdd was on the main sata port the whole time, so I changed to the second sata port. MHDD ran successfully, creating the bin file. But just as I was going to switch off the pc to analyze the bin file, I thought to myself: Let's run the zu program again. So I started with zu /p...no joy, the zu /s....yay - msg said drive was unlocked. Ran mhdd to confirm and low and behold it display there was no password lock on the drive. Switched of the pc and inserted the drive in an external SATA docking station and wham, it popped up right away.
I am really happy now...like a cat who just opened the freezer and got the whole bottle of milk...hehe. Moral of my story is: Never give up, read carefully and finally THIS SITE AND THE PEOPLE HERE ROCKS!!!!!
Thank you everyone AND HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A FESTIVE SEASON

Hello everybody,
i try to research my ATA-password from my WD WD5000BEVT (Acer Notebook 5742G). At first i tried the unlock-command of MHDD with the master password "WDCWDCWDC...."-a.s.o.
Here you can see my screenshots of the result. It seemed to me, it didn't work. After this i tried the method to created a 22.bin file with .dump and .dump2.
On this BIN-Files i can't find any 01 07 00 combination (see attached files), to tell me my password. Could anybody help me with my problem?
Many thanks fist of all.
and
Merry Christmas

No MHDD will not remove or reset a password set via WD Smartware.
